Sunstar Cove Bay

ian cameron

Cove Bay, Hopeman, Moray, Scotland.I promise you the horizon is NOT tilted. A narrow window of opportunity occurred at sunset just as the sun emerged from low cloud and before disappearing below the horizon. Had the sun been any higher flare would have ruined the shot. The sunstar occurs with small aperture lenses which is coincidentally exactly what was needed to hold detail in the foreground stones and distant view. A 0.9ND grad ensured the light was balanced. Please take a look at some new images recently uploaded to Transient Light and Timecatcher.

A wonderful picture, technically amazing depth of focus, beautiful colors, but, but, but:

There are so many of these, photo.net is inundated with "10-22" shots, I just get tired of the prone shots of sunset (or rise), from pebble (or moss, rocks, etc) perpective.

Yeah, I get tired of female nudes in every contorted pose imaginable, or studio and street photos of people with every facial expression or lighting setup that you'd ever want to see, or building facades that have intersecting line after intersecting line, or birds just doing what birds do (fly or stand) and nothing else, or flowers that aren't much more than spots of color, or photos of Utah with nothing but red rocks and places where people used to live. Maybe it's time we all take up either astrophotography or deep sea photography that haven't been done so much; I'll bet we've seen most everything else over and over again.

Well actually this style of shot is quite a diversion from that which I normally shoot. My widest lens by the way is 45mm which is the 35mm film (full frame equivalent) of 22mm. In truth I haven't the slightest interest in pproducing an "original" work of art only a picture that pleases me and is by my own standards aesthetically beautiful. I leave that to all you er "concept" guys.

Ian, your photo on the "daily sampling" feature of this web site sure caught my eye! Wow!! What an outstanding photo... ! I can only hope to someday get such a fabulous shot. I love the colors and details of the rocks, but the sky and sun are also excellent. This is an award-winning photo if you ask me.
