Red Dunes at Sossusvlei

martin_w

Shaped by the wind over thousands of years, the red dunes at Sossusvlei are reputed to be the highest sand dunes in the world (the ones in this photo are almost 1,000 feet high). With the sun arcing down toward the horizon, I began the exhausting climb to the top of one of the dunes, only to realize that its true summit lay far beyond in the distance. A driving cloud of fine sand permeated every crevice of my camera as I photographed the dreamlike landscape. When the sun set, I packed away my camera and tumbled down the soft, steep side of the dune to rejoin some friends patiently waiting at the bottom.

After all that sand, what state is your camera in these days? All your photos are stunning, so I just leave a note on this one to say thank you for posting and hope there are more to come.

Well, it took about a month to get all that sand out of my camera, but I'm happy to say that it still seems to be working just fine!

No detail in sand, no detail in shadows, so must be an extract of a desert, obviously. It is appealing and well done. Sky is well defined in its color. Perhaps too orange, but that is the color you chose to bring out.

Wonderful color. I would prefer to have been at a lower angle so as not to see so much of the darkened side of the dune.

Nice color, shadows and lines. If you played with the cropping a little you could make the images stronger and more abstract. Nicely done.

Wow, I commented on one like this earlier. I love the simplicity and the colors. I just wish the sky had more color to it.

Would love to see texture in the sand...but why quibble?

Thank you for all your comments on this photo. Robert, to answer your question, the color of these dunes was an incredible red/orange that was most dramatically seen at sunset. For this particular image, I also increased the contrast in photoshop by eliminating some of the shadow detail, which was already difficult to see a computer screen. I've attached another version of this photo so you can get a better sense of the colors in the original slide. Regarding the detail in the sand, this image also accurately reflects the original slide and, as far as I remember, in the scene as I photographed it. The sand here was very fine, almost a dust, and the ridges of the dunes were shaped ever so perfectly by the incessant wind. Thanks again!

Great shot! If you haven't already screened it, you might wish to view a copy of the movie "The Cell", as it utilizes imagery quite similar to what you have created here.
