Guest Guest Posted August 26, 2006 I don't think anybody was "trying to say" anything. Photos don't need to do that, do they? Ir's an interesting assemblage of this and that. Needn't make sense by itself, though I do like the elements and puzzle about the girl's expression. Might be nice in a sequence...maybe it's part of a photo novellette, maybe something like: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056119/. Link to comment

Kostas Angelopoulos 0 Posted October 9, 2006 The medium is the message. Marcel Duchamp Excuse my English,if you please: This photograph is conseptual art in it's highest and not only that! I'm explaining: In human communication there are three elements. The sender of the message, the medium that curries it and the reciever. Well according to the discussion so far, i feel the need to say more: The sender is represented from the beutifull (and powefull from that) young lady full of glamour (success itself). She sends the message (sedaction)... to whom? TO US! We are the sailor my friends! Having our duties and our guiltinesses (can't look straight to the point of our interest, espessially when we are on duty, or if others paying attention to us). And the others are WE again , looking through the eye of the photographer that time! And the medium? Ohh, thats brilliant in its illusination: The medium, other words the veihicle is there, were it sould be: at the center of the solid composition according to the diagonals (from the sailors head to the addorable legs and vice versa for the 2nd diagonal) Were is the brilliant illusion? Created by the pseudo 3D perspective of these two diagonals, symbolising our modern? era(playing with dimensions, don't we?), and pointing the shining car, the veihicle, the medium which is, don't forget, THE MESSAGE according to our precious M. Duchamp. Sould i explain why? or we are all "on the road"? BTW who is looking for the driver after a stimulative scene like that? I'll drive first! Step back you all! And why the 40's-50's? Well, thats why i said, not only conseptual but more than that. It is a deeply political comment about our modern society. Feets to the oldies goldies, to a brand new fridge, to a society with new hopes after WW2, to a new leader of the world: America (nothing changed so far), to our BRAND NEW PERSONAL CAR (i mean what the masses experienced at 50's for the very first time) and on and on, never stops... finally the title: chess... bishop takes queen...but not really! He (she) takes only a soldier (sailor)... And if we are not the one this time, lets take the wheel of the messages! That i see Dmitry Popov in that unique image. You are blessed. kostas Link to comment
