My friend asked me to take a few photos of her to help kickstart a

hypothetical modeling career, but it was my first time shooting a

model. I'm requesting critiques on this and a few other shots from

our session. Your comments would be very helpful for next time!

I like the idea of the picture. But I'd suggest, you keep unwanted items out of the picture, like the cable at the right. Also the curtain isn't closed completely. Sometimes it are some small things that distract from the actual motif.

Further (imho) I'd like to see some more of the face. But that's only my opinion :-)

Dan it is not easy to get an original idea or pose with models but if i may point out a few observations from your photo.

1. The break in the curtins draw your attension away from the model.

2. The line running through the bottom also has the eye drawn away.

3. Bits of strings hanging from the womens boots and on the right of the picture.

4. On a personal point allways have eye contact with your subject and if she insits on wearing dark shades have them on so you can see her eyes shooting from the top down.

5.Last point not to discourage you in any shape or form have the model comb her hair so you dont have split divisions.

Good effort for you first time keep at it.... The ingredients are there its just how you serve them matters.

I'm just starting to shoot models myself so I thought I'd give my two cents. All of the distractions have been pointed out already except for the wrinkles in the curtain. I looked through the folder and although they're not perfect, they're a nice start! You seem to have a nice eye for composition, good lighting and, most importantly, a willing model! There is no doubt that the little things make all the difference. I'd suggest that you simply step back and observe the entire scene more carefully before shooting. Personally, I like shots where the model is not looking into the camera or has glasses on. I think they're a bit trickier to pull off, but they're different than most and that's good. I'm sure she let you shoot her again, none of the photos are unflattering to the model. Best of luck!

Your portfolio is off to a good start. As I looked at the photos, the model seldom makes eye contact with the viewer. While eye contact witht he camera is NOT required, it is quite difficult to pull off a good photo of a model who is looking away from the camera. Whoever said "the eyes are the window to the soul" is quite correct. We make a lot of judgements about another person based on "reading" the eyes. If I can't read another person's eyes, then I have to work much harder to make a connection with them. Your model needs to connect with the camera.

Small things can ruin a photo, like the wire on the floor, the curtain, etc. the models' pose is a bit weird and she looks very stiff and uncomfortable. the sunglasses shouldnt be in this photo ... but overall the start is good, you need to work, work work and pay attention to details.
