mikestacey 0 Posted June 15, 2006 This is a better image Sean, in my opinion. What settings did you end up using with the channel mixer? Nearly all shadow detail is there and the water is not too burnt. That central rock is great. Congrats. Link to comment
seandepuydt 2 Posted June 15, 2006 MIke thanks for the help. I think the settings are real close to what your e-mail had. Not having much B&W experience, I'm not sure what to look for to tell if the settings were the best. - Sean Link to comment
tobys bits 0 Posted June 15, 2006 Beautiful capture, works really well in black and white. The water looks great and the composition works really well. What shutter speed did you use for this image? Link to comment
piotrsalyga 0 Posted June 15, 2006 Beautiful image - I prefer this b&w capture. Looks mysterious and soft. Link to comment
jeff.grant 0 Posted June 15, 2006 Sean, this is much better in B&W, a definite winner! Link to comment
sondra kick 0 Posted June 16, 2006 Sean, I like this image in b/w, a familiar scene. Cheers, Sondra Link to comment
seandepuydt 2 Posted June 16, 2006 Thanks Sondra. I thought you might know this falls. Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted June 16, 2006 Sean, This is the type of scene I seek out when on a field trip to the woods. I too prefer the B&W version for some reason. I tried converting your colour version to B&W using the (I'm told) Tri-X emulation of R-25, G-35, B-40 but it tended to mute the yellow flower petals. So, using R-50, G-50, B-0 I came up with this result. Much better in my opinion because it allows the yellow flowers to brighten up a bit without disturbing the other tones too much. Your thoughts? Best, LM. Link to comment
seandepuydt 2 Posted June 16, 2006 Len, I haven't much experience with B&W so your combination is much appreciated. I thought about those flowers when I was mixing up the first combination and thought the same thing. I will try your combination on my file and let you know how it goes. Thanks Sean Link to comment
carsten_ranke 0 Posted June 18, 2006 I had a hard time to chose between the color and B&W, but at the end I vote for the B&W. Very well composed, the rock in the center and the camera point is superb. Agree with Len about the yellow flowers, would be a pity to lose them in the B&W. I would push the envelope and show the yellow as white. I tried channel mixer to make a B&W layer with white flowers, over a B&W layer from calculations (LAB lightness and red channel, overlay blending). The flower layer was masked with select > color range > highlights Link to comment
kahkityoong 0 Posted June 18, 2006 Great waterfall scene. You've chosen a perfect shutter speed to get the flow right without those problematic hotspots Sean. Not sure which one I prefer BW or colour. The yellow flowers were nice in the colour version, but as was pointed out by someone else a little too cool with the blue cast, try a 81A filter in PS? This conversion by Carsten I also like very much. It certainly brings out the textures very well and has a wide dynamic range. Link to comment
pnital 36 Posted June 18, 2006 Sean, my favorite is the B/W, Carsten's conversion as well because it accentuating the flowers and vegetation that brings softness to the composition. I like as well your original that gives a nice cool softness ( without the blue color) to the whole. Link to comment
seandepuydt 2 Posted June 18, 2006 Kah Kit, Pnina, and Carsten thank you all for taking the time to comment on this image. Carsten, I tried you conversion and couldn't make it work so here is my try at keeping the flowers. Thanks again. - Sean I just reduced the blue channel to -10 and adjusted from there.
