I too have been a long time admirer of Rene's work. This isn't nearly my favorite, but I'm glad to see the selection and recognition of such fine work. I applaud such a worthy recipient.

Not only the picture, Rene... but the whole portfolio... and I'm truly happy, you finally get your POW... It was about time !! :-)

Thanks, Rene, for gracing us with so many images, and with so much emotion... After all this while on Photo.net, I would just tell you this... Your photography has always been most inspirational for me... Thanks for being with us, and thanks for reminding us, day after day, how touching a photograph can be...

I have admired this image for quite some time now (along with many other images in your portfolio) and think this POW (photo of the week - not prisoner of war) is most deserving! You work with a darker and more monotone color palette than most people who use color film, and it gives a great signature to your work.

Well, I'm certainly against the grain, but so be it. I find the majority of this authors' work very well excuted but .... well ...so terribly predictable. There is really nothing original, anywhere! Sorry, my opinion.

I like the pseudo-impressoinist look. The tree reminds me of a hot air balloon wafting in the atmosphere...

Sorry to be predictable :-) I agree with the first sentence of the elves: many other Rene's photos would have been better choices (my favourite is http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=436326 and it's an excellent POW candidate IMHO). Many photos in Rene's portfolio deserve high rates for originality, though not for the subject, but for the personal point of view and mood.

The bent tree shoud suggest the idea of wind, power of wind, but nevertheless I find the whole picture to be too static. I also don't like too much the composition, above all the position of the tree. Probably the only interesting thing in this photo is the sky.

Rene I am least suprise to see your work being choosen as POW! I know it will be, sooner or later! Thanks for all those inspiring pictures!! Keep up the good work!

Pretty, but I don't like the lack of any sharpness in the forground or in the tree. I also don't like the right 1/3rd of the shot--there's nothing going on there, and I probably would have cropped. But I'll chock this up to being a matter of taste, and defer to the majority. You certainly have an outstanding portfolio.

I don't think the tree needs to be sharper. As I read once in LensWork, and as I've always thought: if you know it's a tree, why does it have to be in perfect focus?

To those intereseted in learning what it takes, study the work of Rene Asmussen. Plain and simple, there is no one body of work I have ever seen that can compare to this photographer, save for Tony Dumett's photos.

A nice shot but a few things bother me. The sky in the left, central third looks a little overexposed on my screen (although some detail loss may be down to compression). The water on the right is distracting to me and i would have cropped it, or avoided its inclusion in the first place. The water on the left continues outside the picture and i think would have been better used as a lead in to the tree (if at all possible, while still capturing the cloudscape). The tree isn't quite on a third which also spoils the composition. I like the effect of the tree "brushing" the sky, as mentioned in an earlier review, and also appreciate the muted colours.

Like others before me, I have been an admirer of Rene's work for a while now, and can honestly say that Rene has become my favorite photographer on this site. And while I feel like there are other deserving photos in Rene's body of work, I do give an appreciative nod to the elves for recognizing the true talent of this photographer...Now if we could just get the tight lipped Rene to give us a little insight into how these wonderfully moody photos are actually achieved!

Not having come across your work until this POW caught my eye I was intrigued by the above comments so I had a look at your folder. Some of it is not to my personal taste but it is wonderfully competent & very distinctive.I will be back to look in more detail. As for the POW,forget the lack of sharpness, bugger the rule of thirds, this is superbly atmospheric & appeals to my humble eye instantly.Congrats on a worthy POW.Regards Pete.

Stunning piece of work Rene, this image and the rest of your folder. Wonderful stuff, as good as it gets. Congratulations on POW!!

Love it!

I disagree with any need for a sharp tree. This image is not about "tree-ness" but rather about the swirling romantic power vision of the photographer. This image struck me to be a symbol of the unconscious. It is similar to the fascination we had as children when we put our hands into a moving stream to wonder at the swirls created thereby. It immediately opened my eyes to wonder!

This is a surreal picture, quite moody and mysterious. Id like to enjoy it in a larger format. As the elves have already pointed out themselves, this might not be Renes best photo, but just leads to his outstanding portfolio which Ive already been familiar with.

Fuzzy, and too small. If you're going to submit an image for analysis, make it of a suitable size for it to be seen for it's pros and cons. I personally find the tree too close to the center. Sometimes that's fine when the tree is the sole subject, but your wide angle suggests that you're emphasizing the sky and foreground as well. Sorry.

Those admirers who like this picture please explain your comments, i.e. what in particular you like. Reading the comments is more like a reputition of the same praises again and again. But hardly any comment, if at all, gives a deeper insight.I find the tree is a black -something- in between a dark underexposed -something- under a nice sky.Nothing special in composition, colour or overall appearance. The picture does not feel positive either. Thanks

Note from Moderator...Yes, thanks, explainations please. The policy is to try and not be repetative. If you'd simply like to congratulate the artist with a "good job", or "congratulations", why not send an e-mail. Some comments have been edited out for a cleaner, non-repetative condition. Thanks ;-)

"The tree seems to have just brushed the sky - creating a wonderful pattern in the clouds and there is an overall feeling of movement here. Soft, yet painterly, it is a simple and elegant landscape..

The replication of the sweeping pattern in the clouds by the sweeping branches of tree, along with the muted pastel colors, make this a unique image.

The only detraction I can think of in this photo are the pools of water on the ground. They clearly detract from the composition, especially the one in the bottom left corner. Moving forward a few steps and aiming the camera a little higher would have solved that problem.

Nevertheless, it's a strong image, worthy of a POW in my opinion.

As one who has burned more film on skyscapes than a reasonable man might find prudent, I like it. My life is at this point in time in hell, and this image took my mind off it for the briefest of moments, for which I am grateful.

I very good picture, everything seems to be on the centre, but the center it self, which is a bit on the side.

"this was chosen as we were looking for a color image for the POW this week" should this not be an unconfesed sin.

Salutations from Barcelona
