First attempt at this kind of photography. Originally tried using

red food coloring to color milk red...but learned that it takes alot

of food coloring to make milk red. So I used strait red food

coloring to get the shot.

Comments and critiques are always appreciated.

I think using the food coloring by its self worked out well. The fact that there is dark red, white and the mix of both is perfect! Nice Job!

Good shot! I would suggest a higher shutter speed if possible - I know the flash sync speeds on these new digital cameras are not always accomodating. The higher speed would reduce the blur in the falling drop and the bottom drop - would make for a crisper images. Try multiple colors in the same shot. Exampe if there was a cloud of yellow and blue in the milk, that might be cool. I love the softbox catchlight in the drop itself. Great image.

Thank you for the comments.

Ryan, this turned into a lesson about flash duration for me. The shutter speed was at 1/250, but I was always under the impression that strobes will freeze action...I was only part right. I was using a Novatron powerpack system, and apparently Novatrons have a very slow flash duration...which captured alot of the motion. I've learned to use a hotshoe flash (580EX)...they have much shorter flash durations and seem to do better freezing the motion. I used the 580EX on the "Last Drop" water droplet picture in my gallery (blue one).

What a shot - and for a first attempt - excellent! I will agree with Ryan Bartels where he suggests a higher shutter speed. It would get rid of that slight blur around the edges of the drops. But great concept, and way to go, really very good.

Well done. I like this one best of the lot. The red already mixed in the milk makes for good visual impact.

One of the best drops I've seen here. I myself have a folder full of them, but this one has in on a different level. Very impressive. Give us more please.
