Well, simplicity isn't a bad thing, but I think it's the dark background with dark hair that isn't working here. Her hair just blends into the background, so perhaps color version might work better for this shot. Also, I think she may be a bit too centered, perhaps composing something like this shot with less room on the right and more room on the left (because she's looking off to the distance to the left) may also be helpful. But that's just what I think. :) I do like the natural expression on the girl, and her face is nicely exposed.
