Everything is in good focus, including the rapids in the background...probably not an easy feat and I feel one that adds a lot to this particular image. Nice Shot. I like the crop as well. I wish there was a little more color in the image, but that is just my personal preference. Nice exposure.

Is it a composite or real? In either case, this is a good work. I hope the light to be more dramatic and pleasing, but composition is very striking here.

It is not a composite. You are right about the lighting conditions, the sun was on the opposite side and the water was extremely bright. Thus it was difficult to get a good exposure for the bird, so I had to apply some curves to make the it brighter.
