Sogokon 0 Posted May 7, 2006 The three books in the middle are the 3 volumes of Shakespeare published in 1862-64. I'm still wondering why it says "Shakspeare" instead of "Shakespeare" on the front.... Comments appreciated. Thanks Link to comment
tom_barry 0 Posted May 7, 2006 A beautiful image. I'd give it a 10. Shakespeare's name has been spelled in various ways, even in his lifetime. His contemporary, Ben Jonson, himself spelled it "Shakspeare" in referring to a portrait of the Bard. Before English was standardized, many words were spelled in irregular ways. Even later, Ralph Waldo Emerson spelled it "Shakspeare." Link to comment
colin carron 58,916 Posted May 7, 2006 Sergei, Beautiful collection of colours and textures and a good soft light too. Nice old books! In Shakespeare's time English spelling was not standardised and though he himself spells it with the middle 'e' most people just spelt it however they liked so there ar many different variations. (More than a dozen in WS's case)This happened to everyone of course but especially if you had an unusual name. Ah! I see I have been beaten to it..... Link to comment

Sogokon 0 Posted May 7, 2006 Many thanks Tom and Colin! The trick is that inside those books his name has been spelt Shakespeare with an "e"! I thought about it all the time during a photo session. Thanks for an explanation I am glad you liked the picture. Pnina - thanks for your support and visitng! Regards , Sergei. Link to comment
