Evening Playtime

arlo_midgett

While returning to our hotel (along the beach, of course!) we happened upon some children playing around on a large, open skiff. I asked "Hey, how 'bout a photo?" and they scrambled into positions with enthusiasm! Even though I gave them no direction, I was quite pleased to realize (only after getting my film developed) that there was a certain serious quality to the picture -- not at all what I expected of young, rambunctious kids posing for a picture...

My girlfriend and I go 'round and 'round about whether or not to pose

for pictures. She wants all her vacation pictures to be "perfect."

Personally, I like the candid moments because they seem more real (to

me.) What do you think?

i like this photo. the combination of the funky evening light, flash lit foreground and somewhat somber faces of the brightly dressed children make for a somewhat unnerving photo. the boy on the right, just apart from the group, gives it nice composition. nice shot.

I think you need both. Posed pictures have their place but candids are so... well, candid. You gotta love the feelings they convey that posed pictures cannot. But for more "formal" events, you gotta have some posed ones also. Sorry to ride the fence but as they say, "everything in moderation!" By the way, I like this boat picture it's posed but still dynamic because of the kid on the right that isn't part of the main group.

I agree with needing to find a balance. You might not want to overpose, especially when the kids are trying to have a good time. In this picture they look uncomfortable and unhappy...just waiting for the moment when your girlfriend says, "Okay, that's it...relax."
