Jim_Dockery_Photos 2 Posted March 24, 2006 First turn on a blue bird day of backcountry skiing in the North Cascades.
f1-fanatic 0 Posted March 24, 2006 Nice composition and use of lighting under tricky conditions. Very well done!
bradford 0 Posted March 24, 2006 Gotta love the backcountry! Good comp and stop action. Texture in foreground adds an interesting element in snow. Well done!
salvatore.mele 1 Posted March 25, 2006 Jim, that's another beautiful back-country ski picture of yours. Although I like the "Patagucci's" one better, for the remoteness of the landscape, this has a lot more going on. In a sense, it's perfectly contextual of what it feels like to be out there in a nice day. If I were to single out a single feature that I like the most, it would be the way his shadow wraps along the slope. First and foremost, the texture in the blown snow, which pulls the eye in, then the perfect choice of timing, stopping the actions in a nice cloud of powder snow. The red clothing helps a lot, being the only warm colour in all the setting, and gives even more a sense of energy to the skier. From a composition point of view, I like the way he has lots of space in front, suggesting all the exhilarating descent which awaits him. The overall composition of the background is also very pleasant, with the peaks of the background nicely arranged in the shot and the few innocent clouds to give a bit of life to the sky. A detailed for the expert eye, of course, is the up-going trace...the only regular line in the whole shot. Beautiful. p.s. You got a few ludicrous "3" on originality on this one...the internet is for sure a strange place!
Karl Schuler 71 Posted March 25, 2006 First of all I am attracted by the curved ridge. It must be interesting to reach there and to see the landscape behind. Then there is the skier in full action on top of the very steep slope, seemingly in firm powder snow. The photo is well composed. And it gives the feeling of exciting joy, skiing down from there. Hi Salvatore, it is like meeting you from time to time somewhere in the mountains. And it is always a pleasure reading your excellent comments. Karl
marcofrancardi 0 Posted March 25, 2006 Gee Jim. This one is close to perfection (if it were not for the marks on the snow, as Salvatore already noted). I love the composition, the action, the spot and... even the snow's quality must have been super! I don't know if to envy you for the picture or only for being there! 6/6
salvatore.mele 1 Posted March 25, 2006 Actually, I *LIKE* the traces coming up to the mountain... together with the apparent remoteness of the terrain, the blown snow, the exhilarating powder, they complete the feel of the tour-ski experience.
Jim_Dockery_Photos 2 Posted March 27, 2006 I agree Karl - having Salvatore comment on my pictures is like meeting an old friend up on the slopes. As an experienced climber I know he shares the joy of such outings - like Marco said all who love the mountains would envy us this perfect day. While the wind had affected this very top slope, all below was incredible calf deep ultra light powder over a perfect base. We had an incredible 2,000 foot run, then climbed back up for another before heading down to the car.
