Longing for the outside

calvin_hass

For this particular picture, I figured that the desaturation (in PS) would be quite appropriate. Especially given the lock on the gate and the barbed wire fence. Any comments appreciated.

This is a most interesting photo. I love the photoshop technique. Is it possible for you to e-mail me to discuss how one acheives b/w and color in photoshop such as you did here? The boy is perfect.

This would have been incredibly effective cropped. The little boy is so insignificant in this version. There is a lot of extraneous information here. All the extra space on the left hand side of the gate isn't needed to tell a good story. Nor is the area above the gate. The little boy tells the whole story. Not the space around him. Let the mind fill in that part of the scene. And I like the idea and how you have handled the color here. James

An easy way to do this in photoshop is to create 2 layers, both of which are a copy of the original image. Next, you would desaturate the bottom layer and leave the top layer intact. Then using the eraser tool, you can erase the parts of the top layer that you don't want, so that the color will be removed, allowed the black and white image of the bottom layer to show through.

I disagree with James. I think that the fact that the boy takes up so little of the photo makes him seem small and insignificant. This actually makes the photo even more interesting because it strengthens the idea that the boy is young and innocent and is peeking into the huge world outside.

As I emailed Andrea, I found it easy to use the "magnetic lasso" tool to select each of the three regions of the boy, copy and paste them into a new layer. Then I "desaturated" all of the background layer. Very easy.

James -- I think you make some good comments. I am still undecided whether or not I prefer a tighter/cropped shot, though.

Thank you very much for the comments.
