How do you do it?! Your work is amazing, and this piece in particular is truly inspiring. I enjoy the way one's eye is lead through the frame by the vignette-like burning above the horizon, on the sides, and the bottom. I feel contained within this frame and find my eye dancing back and forth between the pier and the light horizon. The poles in the water act as a gate that lets me move between the two main points of interest slowly; their naturally flawed lines leading me vertically and creating an interest within themselves. My eye initially starts on the pier and follows the center plank towards the horizon. After exploring the poles, I am drawn to the bright light and the wispy clouds in the sky. Once ending in the upper right of the frame, my eye jumps back to the intersecting lines on the pier and starts the journey over again. The only problem that I see in this frame is the weight of the overall image. As I spend much of my time on the right side of the frame, I feel slightly off balance. I see that much of your work is done in square format both on photo.net and on your personal website, and realize that having a few pieces with different aspect ratios would look awkward. Maybe having more empty black on the left side would help the feeling of balance. I am not sure without seeing it, and would love to view more frames from this shoot. If it is not too much, may I ask what time of day this image was captured? Did you paint the pier with light or bring it out in photoshop? I would be interested in knowing more about your technique in capture and on computer. Thank you for showing us such beautiful images. I know we will be seeing more from you and will be curious to see your upcoming work.
