Hi Leigh.

This one and the previous 2005-02-20 #5 are really exceptional.

I agree - you should definitely do a show with some of this series, I imagine they would look fantastic blown up very large and lit from behind in a fairly dark room...but of course it's up to you how to show them!

Thanks for posting this inspiring work on PN.
Cheers, Hugo

I very much like this change from the recent ones you've displayed. I think the series is enhanced by including both. The others have an ethereal, pure stillness to them -- as we've all noticed, the long exposures still even the waves, showing them as a sort of submerged tension in the water. Here, the cloud movement adds motion and even suggests a potentially violent change in the weather -- a very different atmosphere, with a different color palette, yet sharing basic elements of the preceding images. As a matter of personal taste, I myself may prefer this one. But mainly I think the beauty of both types of images is highlighted by displaying them side by side.

A good example of two things: horizons in the middle work if done deliberately, and sunrise shots don't need warm colors to be aesthetically pleasing. I would definitely include this one in a show.

Leigh...Its an excellent photo in every aspects. Was about writing about why this work so well,...but i think i rather lean back and enjoy it. Definetly a photo for a show.

I don't want to take credit, Leigh, for having first suggested the idea of a show, BUT, I would accept a plane ticket out for the opening.

This just keeps getting better. Here the blue line across the sea is like some signal in a new universal language.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful reactions, and especially your opinions on fit with previous work. That's very helpful.

I didn't know what to expect from this shot since the sky was heavily clouded with some gaps letting the predawn light through. I started the exposure as usual, expecting the light levels to rise. They didn't, well not much anyway, since the clouds were in the way. Without any other options, I just left the shutter open, probably about 12-15 minutes until there seemed some hope of an image having registered on film. During that time the clouds moved slowly -- there wasn't much wind -- creating the motion pattern seen here.

Sean, I'm still waiting for the Imacon scan, but here it is in the meantime (it's nice to see you using the compliant terminology :-)):

Love the streak of blue light across the ocean and the reflection on the wet sand. You've done a great job of maintaining some detail in the sand also. The turquoise colour doesn't look at all out of place and enhances the surreal aspects of this image. Basically, it all fits together very well and the result is a highly original piece of work.

Just noticed that you used a very wide angle lens on this yet there is virtually no vignetting. At this time of day, that's pretty impressive. Also, no negative effects from the ND grads with this lens?

The wide angle also sets this one apart from the rest and definitely increases the drama in the sky.

This landscape shot has such a unique feel to it. . . so simple and yet so perfect. . and thanks for your explanation of the long exposure to get the soft cloud effect.
