Color Photography

The title is ironic. This photograph is actually a color photograph, with no digital manipulation to desaturate it. You can see this if you look carefully at some of the highlights in the reflections off the black paint.

I have given it the old college try. I have looked at this photograph in small, medium and large formats. It first struck me as so dreadful that I naturally had to assume I was missing something. I still admit I might be missing something. I've given this photograph a 3/3 instead of a 1/1 rating for that reason. I may wake up tomorrow morning and realize exactly what I've missed.

 

But let me speak honestly about how I feel about this photograph in the present. In a few words I dislike it. I dislike it because I do not see the point of it. Possibly if I were an carpenter I would see the point, but I am not a carpenter. I mean someone who builds houses might become enthusiastic about the joints and the way the column sits on top of stairs.

 

Besides the point of this photograph, there is a compositional problem. The white of the column blends too easily with the white background. This throws off perspective, which I believe is important in a photograph like this.

 

If someone could enlighten me as to why I should see this as a good photograph I would appriciate it.
