Sunrise Bromo

ian cameron

A 3am trek up tp the rim of the caldera with a head torch blazing. It took the best part of 3 hours to get there and in those days I was fit. The experience was jurassic. The lighting on the fluted sides of the Bromo quiraing was jaw dropping. I was so astonished I walked up again the next morning. Please take a look at some new images recently uploaded to Transient Light and Timecatcher.

Great one Ian , I did this very same hike in 1975

like you I was fit then. I love this photo, No words needed this is the place as it is.

You propably know the vulcano erupted recently, may be time for a second visit. Too hard to lug a view camera up that mountain.

i simply loved this place. maybe i should scan my old pics once. however, well done, but i guess you took a car ride up there (not a hike as one poster suggested) and spent an early morning with loads of french and japanese guys.

best regards, fr

Florian no I was a backpacker. I had no idea that a bus service took people to the viewpoint on the caldera rim, makes sense though. I started off at 3am hiked for 3 hours and arrived pre dawn when i got there I was alone. About ten minutes after sunrise I was shocked to see three coach loads of tourists disgorge themselves and squabble for shooting space. The initial peace and solitude was a moment I will never forget.

Hi Ian yes it was Bromo that erupted. As to the bus service there was none the time I was there , however locals run a pony service to get you there at sunrise. We hired a car in Surabaya there was no road into the valley then.

Well, I don't know whether to thank you for showing me this great image of a lovely place I'v enever seen or be pissed at you for adding another place to my "list of places to see before I die," which is already far too long! :-) Great job.

Nice to be looking at your images again.

I went here in 1992 and went for an impromptu trek up the ridge behind the Bromo crater (lit in your shot).  It was great, until we went down a side ridge to get back to the bottom of the outer crater.  We found oureselves battling through thick (but mostly dead) jungle having found the path disappear.  Eventually, we got to the bottom and made our way out of the outer crater, roughly in the top left of your picture and found a remote village.  Having surprised villagers by our presence, they quickly regained their poise and offered us a lift in a truck to Malang, the nearest big town!

Good shot by the way.
