Hi Pnina :) "Fulani" is the correct spelling ;) As for the image, Although the black background really makes her stand out, I feel that it robs the image of the vibrancy of colour and life depicted in the second image. Also, the fact that the b/g is all black yet her face is so brightly lit causes confusion to the eye as I look at it.

Overall, your work on Mali (and generally!) is poignant enough for me to allow you to get away with this image as is... well, almost ;)

Best regards from Kenya,

All of you, your feedback is importent.

Mark Anthony, thanks for telling me the spelling is right.I have deliberatly darkened the bg. as I think her face are very interesting and I didnot want anything to disturbe the eye from observing the details. she stands out that way as you have said. On the other hand I wanted the viewers to see her in her natural surrounding, hence the second one!!Thanks for your detailed comment.

Stunning shot-portrait, Pnina. Those earrings made me gasp, but, boy, what a stunning photo. ( love the crop, though the original is very interesting, too.)

this deserved 7, but can't.

...Beautiful and colourful portrait. The earings remind me of a type of bean named "Winged Beans". Do you know if such a bean is indigenous to that area? Great work. Regards, Kelvin.

That woman imo has a very interesting face, the earings are an addition to her face...

Kelvin, I was not there long enough to know if the beans are growing there.

Haleh, as you know I work to better the status of woman, there is so much to do in those countries.

Gerry, glad to see you, welcome back! .

I'm torn over the background. On the one hand, I like the one posted as the eyes draw you right in. On the other hand, the second shot is perhaps a little more interesting to me because the surroundings give me something extra.

What an amazing woman Pnina, very majestic, lovely capture. I also must add I love the other alot, the woman in the doorway behind her is marvelous too...that's a very alive image and I so get a sense of her life from it.

Pnina, what a stunning portrait! Those earrings are amazing and exotic and show us a distinctive culture.

As to the background - both a darkened background and the original will have their place. I could imagine this shot for example being used as book cover where impact is required and the shots with more of the context left intact would serve a documentary purpose.

Peter, Kim, Peta and Colin.

I'm uploading her original portrait. imo the bg. was some competition to her face, the black bg. accentuated her face details.

Hiroya, Thanks for taking the time, but it looks very dark on my monitor, much darker than I remember her face, I think that it is due to differences in monitors.

BTW, Salvatore's link about Dogon's astronomy is a skeptical and good one.

Pnina I really like this one. The glimpse of this culture you have given us is a treat. I also really like your 2nd version here. The second woman looking on adds much to that image as does seeing the full weight of load. Well done Pnina...

wonderful, Pnina. I'm not seeing any problems with the background on my monitor (Mac G5 flat monitor, recently calibrated), so I won't try improving it because I don't think I can. It's a prize winner and the only thing wrong with it is I didn't take it! - Mister Ken

Too dark? Hmmm, I also can see the streak on the right side of original photo which Ben has pointed... I'll check the balance of brightness and contrast of my monitor again. Thank you.

David, Ken and Hiroya thanks for your comments.

Ken, glad to see you here, and thanks for telling me about your calibrated screen, as there are differences, mine was calibrated some time ago, and if you find it compatible, I'm glad to hear it.

Pnina - I like the "original" that you uploaded ... the colors and detail seem true-er. I have read about cultures that use enlarged holes in the ear lobes. This photo emphasizes what I imagined.

Chipsy, Lou Ann and Ken.

Lou Ann, you are right about the tradition, but still that woman with the earings was something special....

Ken, thanks for stopping by, I'm glad you liked it.
