Death by digital...

david d.

Like the titanic - who would have thought that 6x7 film cameras would become Ebay fodder.

This is an awesome picture. I am sure it would get very well received if you were to request a critique for it. If you do request a critique for this I would suggest deleting it, resubmitting it and then ask for a critique.

I was thinking along the lines of the sinking of the titanic. Who

would have thought that digital would have killed off the 6x7.....

shame!

Hi David, I like your reference to the Titanic... The sharpness of your picture reflects the sharpness of the Iceberg? :-)

Breathtaking idea you had here and extremely well executed.

I am glad you posted this for critique. It is an awesome image.

Interesting statement though. I have always had 35mm cameras. I never thought I could do medium format justice and so never bought one. Because of digital I now own two.

Hi David

Did you use software to create the water? If so would you mind telling me the name of it?

Great shot by the way -you have captured the full story in one image.

Really very original photo. But the philosophical question about whom killd who is not so easy to answer, I think. The digital cannot kill anything. The natural laws (for someone), the creator (for someone) and some people are able to kill something. I think that lot of people are going to buy digital because it's shorter to get something out of camera, and they don't think anout quality. But nevermind, up to theese days, most of prospects and advertisement for digital cameras are done with medium and large format cameras, like hasselblad. It's a shame for something. By the way, I am confused, that one of greatest fours in 35mm, minolta is now stopping any further production of photo equipment. I am using minolta and this is like knife to back, but this is life. Well, I am not enemy of digital photography, but people using it, have to very carefully respect todays limits of this technology.

Sorry for such a long comment, better suited for some forum, but this photo evokes a lot of ideas and thoughts, what in end means, its very good photo.

Kind regards, r. :)

The photo setup here is a single softbox setup shot against a black backdrop... then I did some painting with light to get the effect I wanted.. And for the water there is a plugin called "Flood" I believe it comes from Flaming Pear or something... It is fun to use.. hope this helps....

I love this concept! I myself am a child of the digital age, I never shot Film but I can completely understand the loss. This is a fantastic representation of that. I just have one Tiny Minute critique... The name of the image is DEATH...its not "the END of an era" or "the SETTING of an era" especially with u referencing the titanic and ship sinking. Death, Sinkings, Loss...its rarely ever clean, strait, or flat. Death by nature is messy and I believe if the name of your image is "Death of an Era" the image shouldn't be sooo clean and strait, ships sink one side first...getting to my point... so maybe if the camera was sinking into the water at a slight angle ...for me that would completely set the image as well as the concept WAY over the top....but as i said that is a VERY minute critique. :P

..oh and also i prefer the name "Death by Digital" better then "Death of an Era" the former has a nice ironic tone to it personally because of the concept that Diginal photography has begun to kill off film, but also because the water was added digitally, adds that touch of irony.

But other then those 2 minuscule things....FANTASTIC WORK.

edit: Wow I just realized how long that was...sorry all :(

how can it be the death of an era when you have preserved it so wonderfully in this new representation. this is rather marvelous really.

Very original shot here David, well executed and beautifully done. It does set a great job of conveying your message about the digital era.

What I find brilliant about this, is that the aspect ratio is 6x7, implying that this was shot on medium format. Subtle, but I like it!
