Windmill

MichaelChang

Actual scene was near total darkness except for 2 incandescent lights from the main building. The fiery skies are a result of cloud-reflected light pollution from the nearby town. The red door on the windmill offers clues to relative size of objects in the scene.

This is a heavily clouded night shot with virtually no ambient light.

The only available light was from 2 lit windows and some visible light

polution reflected off the clouds. The scene was barely visible with

the naked eye, and the camera's LCD showed virtually nothing so I was

almost shooting blind. The photo was dark-frame subtracted with a bit

of dodge & burn to bring out the luminance information. 8 second

exposure, f2.8, SONY DSC-F505V.

I'd appreciate comments on how this photo can be improved (through

another attempt or through software enhancement).

Michael,

The color and exposure are incredible, combined with excellent composition.

Very dramatic lighting, great shot. There is some slight lean in the tower, and a lot of blank ground at the bottom which detracts (my eye) from the rest of the pic.

I think this is an awseome shot. I personally dont like the yellow of light pollution but this is the best shot of it i've ever seen. If you are able to shoot this again I wander what kind of filters you could put on the lens to make the scene a different color. Still very well done.

Who said it was nice ? Every one ? Ok then...

Congrats, Michael... And if someone says it isn't a good picture, just don't believe him, ok...?

Very beautiful. I like the beauty contrasted against the ambiguity regarding the light source, is it dawn, or dusk, or a floodlight?

What a terrific photo. I think the two small trees are a little bright. Other then that, I wish I was there right now. Well done.

This one would make a terrific gum print. Where was it shot? Ile Perrot, perhaps? I'd like to give it a try some day.

8 seconds ?!?! I'm amazed. I would have thought several minutes due to RF. Do you remember your aperture? The color, especially on the distant trees, is really nice.

Hi Carl, fortunately, digital cameras don't suffer from RF. :-) I would have gone longer than 8 seconds had the camera allowed. The distant trees adjacent to the windmill were lit by stray lighting behind the windmill.

There is that dark frame subtraction. :) I have not had time to figure that one out yet. Okay, how it looks? Like hell, Michael. Fire actually!! Excellent. Just one teeny nit pick since you asked - are you tilting at windmills? on purpose? The windmill seems to me to tilt somewhat backwards. Actually the whole scene does. No one else has mentioned that, so is it just me?

The tilt is due to perspective distortion of the lens at full wide angle. It could have been fixed in software but I thought it best to remain flawed. I was more occupied thinking about how a few bats may be lured in for a 2nd try. :-)

Very well composed shot and I like the enhancement you've done with the software. It has rendered the colors so well and enhances the balance of the composition. I've seen the several windmill shots you took and I think this one is the best. I think the perspective could have been improved a bit to reduce the "leaning in" factor, but this is outstanding all the same.
