This photo caught my eye and kept it longer than most as while I enjoyed it and studied it I had questions about the owner of the hands which is a compliment and credit to you. The hands are so powerful I felt the need to look again but this time holding a white piece of paper cropping the top just below the neckline.

Now the hands are surrounded in darkness and the questions become more of a quest for the answears. My Compliments on your photograph, Pete

These are the hands of my own grandmother whose despite her old age still very gets up every morning to work in a rice field she owns. To me her hands represent the level of endurance, hard work and dedication i wished i had.

Thank You for your reply, somehow I could feel the story was as strong as the photograph. Your Grandmother could become and I hope it will become a work in progress for you.

Spend whole days documenting her from first light to last in every part of her day and you will create a timeless treasure.

Kind Regards, Pete

Hands have more character than anything else I can think of, and your portraits of them are just wonderful! Yes, keep documenting your grandmother, and please keep sharing!

Wonderful! To find out the story of your Grandmother makes this a touching photo. Take a lot of photos of her, she sounds like quite a woman!

Nice work. I'd like to see the rest of her fingers lit if possible. Also a little more dof so I can see more detail in her necklace & neck.

I must say that your entire collection of hand images in your portfolio is by far the most powerful i have seen of the subject. The texture of this woman's hand is trully amazing and so is your composition and treatment on these images. When I see this image as well as the other hand images I can't help but think about my own time, life, mortality. What palm-prints are we leaving behind as we inch closer and closer to death? Thanks for sharing.

This photo has a lot of power. Yes your grandmothers hands are old and full of character. Yes, the black background adds dramatic contrast. I only wish that I had any idea who your grandmother is. If she was doing her favorite thing with these hands it would be so much more human. Try to go deeper into your characters. Here you only attain the obvious.

Albany thanks for your comments. Photography can sometimes be a limited art form. It allows the artist the venue to express an idea and the viewer the opportunity to make their own interpretation. What you get out of seeing it could be superficial or profound. Both are acceptable. Beyond that, a book may be a more appropriate venue.

This is a powerful photo..such strength ..and i think the fact that it does not show what she is doing is one of its greatest strengths as that it allows the viewer to assign " power" to what thier perception is...personally i have seen my own grandmothers hands in that very same position praying the rosary and was instantly reminded of the power of faith. Its all perception and its just my opinion..that the greatest art..leaves roomn for us to interperet and be moved..all in our own ways..This photo is beautiful.
