I think that the amount of discussion and the number of different opinions illustrates how great this image is. To me, I see the juxtaposition of a beautiful woman in an exquisite gown to the inner anguish of marrying against her will. Perhaps the butterflies symbolize her inner beauty, hopes and dreams departing her body on the day of marriage. If that is the case, I think it is appropriate that they distract from her face.
