I might be wrong, but I feel it would work better croping all but the buildings, they give an impression of patchwork that i like and the sea and sky distract me from it. Just an opinion .Regards.

I would go a little further, but as I said its one opinion, I like the second version more.

Hello Nick, it looks like a model and I have to say, not the most prepossessing place I have ever seen. A bit like Grantham or Slough, but without the charm and character(?). I know you are going to say it's a fine place, but it seems a little sterile in this view.

As an aside, what is written on the road in the centre?

Cheers. Pete

Thank you Sondra, it is an odd place and does have the feel of a Toy Town.

Thank you Curtis, I agree with you about the sky, but I am a fan of "naturalistic" photographs, and in the dead of winter, close to 66 degrees North, skies seem to be a little blank. Perhaps you are right about the crop, and I submit a tighter one here for comparrison - I do however wonder if a dramatic sky would detract even more from what was my focus for the photograph - namely the town?

Thank you Colin, I too like the head land. With only 4 fours of daylight at this time of the year, this is as beautiful as the light got. I must return in the spring or summer so see what nature has to offer.

Thank you Pete, it is an odd little place, but does have a good number of excellent attractions such as museums and galleries, and far too many superb restaurants for the size of the population. Slough is an unfair comparrison (I share Betjeman's feelings on that subject!), but it reminded me a lot of Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands.

Best wishes, and fond regards, Nick.

There was nothing written on the road down the centre - I think what you are mistaking for lettering are the illuminated Christmas Decorations hanging across the street.

Thanks for sharing the view! I've been wanting to visit this place for a long time. Not sure if I'll ever get that far though...

The overall feeling that I get from this particular part of Reykjavik, is that it really isn't much different from many other towns that I have visited in Scandinavia. Sterile? Never! Clean? Always!

BTW, I wouldn't crop a thing and stick with your original panoramic view - it has room to breathe in the fresh nordic air.

toy-town is a good description, the colours are special, looks like a desaturated and re-coloured picture somehow (hope you understand what I mean). The crop is perfect for me as is.

Nicholas, the original upload has more context than the crops, it's interesting - this is a cityscape after all, I'd like to know about the sea and the harbour entrance.

It's my experience that Architectural images often call for the photographer to strip away context - sky, water, neighbouring buildings : but not this study; not for me in any case.

Have to love all those straight lines, the signature of the rational mind. Bet this place is ever so orderly ....
