White birds are extremely hard to photograph without blowing the highlights or getting the rest of the image too dark, especially with today's digital cameras (can't wait for better in the future). Judging by the light and the image's histogram, I think that highlight detail, or at least some of it, may have been there in the original. You may want to try a different approach at processing it. It is a nice picture by the way.
