Quebec Winter Barn

peter_beal1

This is a picture of another abandoned barn on a dirt road in Quebec. The odd thing is there isn't any farmhouse nearby, it sits really by itself.

To center or not to center... Basic rules for composition have been in place for...longer than I can remember. If understood and used properly they will strengthen most subjects. The way that space is broken up affects our feelings and reactions to it. Learning the rules and understanding them will help you to "break" them successfully. The Winter Barn photo does violate some basic composition "rules" but it's not that objectionable. A lovely subject (for us who don't live in the snow) with good exposure and lighting. I would have composed differently but that's not to say that this image doesn't work as is. I like looking at it so the photographer's intent has been achived. Good effort!

Some second thoughts. After reading the photographers comments about the subject I feel that the "centered" composition strengthens the fact of the barns isolation and creates the illusion of more empty space surrounding it further enhancing it's loneliness.

Ok, I'm done now.

This if not the most pleasing winter scene Ive seen it is surly near the top of my list. The brilliant colors and everything works so well. Thanks for sharing this. Bill Magee

In this case I would have not composed the picture this way and would have not put anything (or at least less) between the barn and our eyes, but this was maybe not possible and it would have been another picture. I love it also as it is the above comment is just to tell how I would have prefered it.

Is it the same barn as before?

Rules??? A word that sounds ridiculous when used in relation to creativity, never could understand that. The barn looks great in the center, I think it shows it's solitude in being surrounded by the snow. Great Job!

I like it. Especially that it is in the center. I agree with the earlier comment that the centering composition makes it feel like you've just come across it after hiking to a clearing in the woods. Well exposed too.
