henrik.ploug 0 Posted November 30, 2005 This is the most interesting of the three photos because you are using the foreground of the picture. I also like the contrast between the old ship and the new skyscrapers. But I'm a little confused as to which subject you want me to look at. The ship is framing the skyscraper in the background, and the skyscraper is the subject with the most light, so the skyscraper gets my immediate attention. But the skyscraper is out of focus and the shipwreck is in focus (and also a more interesting subject), so my eye wanders back and forth. I'm not sure how to solve this problem, but maybe you could move even closer to the wreck and show me some detail which would reveal the decay of the ship. By moving closer to the subject in focus the skyscrapers would become even more blurred which would help me prioritize which subject to look at. Another idea would be to use a telelens (maybe 300mm) and move further away from the boat. This way you would be able to show more of the boat, and at the same time blur the background with a large aperture (small f-number). When you are shooting non-moving subjects - especially at night you should use a tripod (even though your lens has IS). Another way to get the wreck sharper and more in focus is to use an off-camera flash. The flash would illuminate the wreck without affecting the background. I think you have found an interesting subject. Try taking a lot of photos from different angles, different focal length and different times of the day/night and see how it affects your photos.
