yellow hood...

salih_g_ler3

When I woke up early in the morning it was snowing. Prints on snow always atract me so I pick up my camera and start to wait in front of the window. A little later a lady came by walking her dog and I took several photos. It was spontaneous, the lady and her dog were leaving footprints on the snow and all in white lady's yellow hood was very atracting.

A lovely scene and good exposure capturing detail across a wide tonal range from the wrinkles in the walker's pant legs to the texture of the snow. Nice job!

Lauren,

You misunderstood my point. I'm not cutting anything off at the bottom; just cropping top and right, very subtly, to eliminate a bit of blank space top and right. It strengthens the image (IMHO) also by moving the curved path a bit higher at the top. The walker and dog are also emphasized more. See attached cropped photo.

Like most, I enjoyed the suspense and theatrics in this shot which follow the dog's disinterested even-pawed tracks up to the pause and sudden interest in something out of the frame. It congers age-old man vs. nature theme in the safety and normalcy of the path verses the wild unknowns of what might exist off-path, off-frame. I think the womans scarf is insignificant except to color the contrast reinforced the central themes. The roundness and periodic spacing of the lightpoles expresses a comfortable familiarity which is broken by the emptiness and lost utility in the parkbench. Nice understated drama without overstated tension.

I see the two lampposts as almost a surreal means of duplication. It's almost as if

there's a splice or mirror image here and I think that works very well with this image. I

don't see those poles strictly as linear compositional additions or as static vs. moving

elements, but as a most thoughtful addition which keeps my eyes on their toes, as it

were.

Paul Brener croped something, but I don't think to do that. I saw both images frequaently one by one for sometime, but I still feel that the original one is better. Paul thinking about more tight composition but this spacious blank providing it a cleanness. subjects are clear, from white to black, there are so much tones, yellow is only the color int and giving this a beauty. This is second day I am wathing it and found this much interesting. Cleanness of this pic can realy attract anyone. Amazing...

Pankaj,

Thank you for your excellent post. When I looked at the two images side by side before posting, I clearly saw that some folks (perhaps most) might prefer the uncropped version. I really like your comment "but this spacious blank providing it a cleanness". Usually I would associate the word "clean" with a tighter, simpler composition, but I understand and agree with what you are saying here. I might also use the word "elegant".

In fact, as I look more and more at both versions, I'm coming to think that the uncropped version is better because it is more elegant.

Of all the subjectivity about art, perhaps composition is the most subjective. Wherever you come down on this print, hopefully these posts have prompted the kind of thoughts that Pankaj has expressed so well.

Given a couple of days to think about it and look at Paul's cropping, I must state positively that no cropping in necessary or desireable.......................It looks best as originally presented.

I see interesting combination of object in this pic.
Two lampposts in small space of pic. left of the curve ,
Single settee on right of curve in empty space of pic and
Two animates in middle of curve ( way ) with difference behavior.
If you be in right way, you do not be alone( like lampposts). But if you do not attend to way you
lose it and will be alone like settee in a big empty space!
one of the important things that helps you to find right way is light(lamppost).
The lights are near the the way and near the humans.
