No, this one?s not too dark. It works fine for me. Especially the light and reflection and the sky as background.

I would suggest a slight rotation to the right, or clockwise, to compensate for what looks like unintentional camera rotation. Just appears unlevel. Perhaps 2 degrees clockwise would help. Aside from that your exposure is good... I like the luminosity of the sky. Well done. Regards,

Yes, I agree with the angle of dangle here. Truth is though although I admit angle is off here, walls are off vertical as is the light as are the railings!

I am not sure if you were tryiing to say that in reality that the walls and all were cocked left--it really doesn't matter, there is nothing in the image to give me a reason for them being off and so it feels disconcerting. If this is your intent then leave it as is, if not, it should be straightened. as to your question, regarding dark or light, it is fine for the subject, but I don't think the photo is that interesting. you have a nice line, the wall, bringing us into the photo, but then you leave everything centered and the image just dies--the eye doesn't want to move around, so the image becomes pretty boring. Most of the space on the right side of the stairs brings nothing to the party and yet demands attention. I think the image would be much better (straightened first) if most of the right side (3/4's right of the stairs) was eliminated as well as 1/2 or so of the floor in front of the stairs.

Mono, many thanks for the critique. I agree with the comments on being off vertical. I will correct this next time. I'm not so sure I agree about the crop. I've tried this and posted above. To me this presents a problem of not being able to get more of the door in frame by moving left due to the railings. So where does this leave the image? Is it begging for a focal point of say light seeping from within the door? or a human interest within the frame?

Paul, I hope it is alright, as I am going to post how I envisioned the crop--you were a little tighter on the right than I was trying to convey. This may not be the right crop either, but I do think that some breathing room on the right is good--I cut into the foreground a little and normally, for myself, I would probably sleep on it before I finalized it.

As to the photo, sometimes we can only make the photo as good as it can get and we move on. If you want to redo this shot, just think in terms of working the scene. Spend an hour or so shooting from various angles-including camera heights, or if you want to include a person try that--but maybe make the person more mysterious than a portrait-that is your call, until you find something that works, or maybe it never gets better--it happens.

Good luck, MONA

holy toledo, and i use that term because this reminds me of the work of that spanish painter whose name i can't pull out of my dull brain this morning, but famous for painting toledo. exceptional colors and mood. nuetral on the crop debate, agree to tilt right. very fine piece of work.

Thanks Ben, I shall see if I can find the name of the painter.

So what time is it where you are compared to PN time? I know that if I view PN early morning I might just cathch you on a late one! Power of the internet..

Hello Paul, it's nice to see some more photos of Chester. Nick Price has also posted some. I think this captures the rather dark sandstone of the walls rather well. It's a photograph that shows what the feels like even though it's not exactly what it looks like.

Nice work.

Regards. Peter
