The 'Mary Anne' is a coble - a traditional type of fishing boat from the east coast of England. The victorian heroine Grace Darling and her lighthouse-keeper father rowed in a coble to rescue survivors from a wrecked ship just a few miles north of here.

In the early hours of the morning of 7th September 1838 the steamer `Forfarshire' struck a rock in view of the lighthouse kept by William Darling. From her bedroom window in the lighthouse the 22-year-old Grace caught sight of a number of survivors clinging to a reef. Shortly after 7 o'clock that morning Grace and her father launched their coble and in two trips rescued nine survivors.

(The previous shot of Robin Hood's Bay here was taken from the doorway to the right of this shot).

Colin, I like the wide angle use, color, and light quality. The boats in forground anchored the scene while the receding bulidings lead you to the island in the distant horizon. Nice one. ^_^

What a nice story and what a great picture, Colin. The colours of the boats are in a beautiful harmony with the entourage. I love the brightness of the picture and the far view over the sea and the wonderful sky above. Really Beautiful!

Thanks Wilson, Pnina, Alexandra, Ben, Sondra and Ada! The weather that day was bright sunlight with thunder storms - not good for holidays on the beach but great fot photography!

Ben, I originally had the Sigma 12-24 full frame but despite it being sharp, found it too bulky and difficult to use with filters. So I flogged it on ebay and bought the Canon 10-22 instead. If anything the Canon is less sharp than the Sigma but has better colour, is quite a bit smaller and is easier to use with filters. It tends to stay on my camera the whole time as I have a liking for wide angle shots (in case you had not guessed. I'm trying to make a conscious effort to see longer focal length shots too so I don't get boring!

I don't think you need worry about becoming boring Colin.

Another great wide angle shot, Colin. Wish there were only one boat in the foreround, but surely you coudn't ask them to remove it. :-) Very good.

One boat would be good. I could have pushed it down the slipway into the sea in the interests of art, I suppose :-)

Hi Colin! I had very little time these last days to visit my "interesting" friends and I just discover this other beautiful shot of the Robin Hood bay. You have really captured a very bewitching atmosphere in this little town.

regards,

Henri

Nice sea-landscape and very good composition. Is it only me who is aware of the magenta hue in sky and house ( to the left)?. Wonderful clarity and depth.

These colors are so perfectly paired. From the clouds, buildings, boats, and the sand. I would love to be in a place like that. Beautiful Photo

Thanks Amal, Paolo, Ken, Jan Olof & Heather for your comments.

Jan Olof, no I didn't spot the magenta cast top left but you are right. I have corrected it. (I hope!)

Colin, this works at many levels. Compositionally I like how you have played with the curve of this boat, which is amplified in the curve of the street. But what really stands out for me is the clarity of the scene -- great sharpness and luminosity throughout.

This image is one of my personal favorites! I love the earthy tones and the single blue component really stands out nicely. Great sky, too! You must have had a wonderful day in this place!

This is an outstanding shot, its dramatic lighting, perspective, and colors are wonderful ! KInd of curved diagonals leading my eyes to the horizon. After the rain, the roof and ground colors and tones are marvellous !
