I like this photograph for the mood at first glance, but I wonder if you could not have brought in a little fill to the tree in the foreground for visual texture, while shooting?

 

A second alternative would be to vertically crop that tree a touch more than half. I feel that this dark area is excessive and holds back this image.

 

Your shot has a nice bit of mystery to it.

as for visual aspects - added fog was good but for your undivided commitment to involve your bench sacrificed any appeal to which these tree cannot afford

Regardless of my cropping bias, this is a wonderful shot. What disturbs my eye is not the large amount of black which disturbs Eli, but the highlights coming rhough the leaves. To me it becomes more powerful if cropped horizontally just above the LH branch & below the 1st highlight of the LH tree. Maybe then skim some of the RH black. What's left is the part of the image that grabs me.
