ken_thalheimer 3,739 Posted November 26, 2001 Nicely balanced, exposed and all around well done photo. The colors work toward the balance Link to comment
adam_preble 0 Posted November 26, 2001 Agreed - the balance is pleasing and the color (the red on either half of the image in particular) works for the photo. I'm troubled by one thing, though... perhaps it's just faulty human perception, but the scene doesn't look to be quite level. I feel like the camera is slightly lower on the left than it is on the right. Or perhaps the camera wasn't pointing exactly perpendicularly to the wall. (?) Link to comment
seven 0 Posted November 27, 2001 I suppose the horizon is about .3 degrees off - but I love this image. I'm guessing she's reading a steamy novel, and the fire extinguisher (is that what it is?) is sin standby mode;-) Great pic, lovely composition. Link to comment
dan_kalish 0 Posted November 27, 2001 I'll start with my favorable impressions: its an original design, not a copy of thousands of other similar (classic) prints. Agreed: the color balance is good, the quality is incredible (yay, Minilux); its an impressive photo. Yes, the bench is not horizontal, giving the impression that the picture is not level. However, the tower is vertical so I contend the picture IS level. My main criticism is the composition. There's too much empty space. A weakness of wideangle lenses (and P&S) is that too much is in the picture and in this one, too much is on the edges. That may have been necessary to compensate for another composition flaw: too much space between the woman and the pillar, and not enough connecting them. Link to comment
daniel matuschek 0 Posted November 27, 2001 Hi Dan, thank you for the comment. I disagree with you about the empty space. I did a (very bad quality) version of your idea (or my interpretation of your idea). Do you like this more ? Personally I like the original version (a little bit) more then this one, but I can understand what's your idea. Link to comment
dan_kalish 0 Posted November 28, 2001 Hi, Dan: As you know, the emotional response is far more important than any cold scientific analysis. So go with what YOU like. The original picture was interesting because of its sparseness. However, I found it boring and my eyes kept staring in the middle where nothing was happening. There was no interplay or connection between the two items of focus: the woman and the pillar, and each was uninteresting. The only movement was the bench, and that brought one's eyes off the page. I do like the second picture better; there's still no interaction, but the two items of interest fill the picture. The pillar is very interesting in its texture; the woman is doing nothing and is boring. That difference between the two is an interesting inversion (an inanimate object being more visually interesting than a living person???) and provides interplay. Visually, there's still no connection and its almost like two independent pictures adjacent to each other, but it becomes interesting because of the difference in visual appeal. So much for opinions! lou_verruto 0 Posted November 30, 2001 Nice the way it is. Don't screw around with it. Go with your first instinct. Very nice. Link to comment
dominique 0 Posted November 30, 2001 I like this photo as a story. it's interesting, it stimulates my imagination what this human is reading about. I like the fire exstinguisher. Link to comment
matt_milan 0 Posted December 5, 2001 Compostion and exposure are spot-on... But I fail to recognize the significance or interest of this photo. Lone woman reading magazine + steel beam and accompanying fire extinguisher + stark backdrop = ??? Sorry, but other than it's technical aesthetics, this photo shows me nothing. Link to comment
dennisdixson 0 Posted December 10, 2001 "But I fail to recognize the significance or interest of this photo." " Sorry, but other than it's technical aesthetics, this photo shows me nothing." You seem to be alone in your analysis and your statement seems a bit judgmental. To me this is an interesting photo of a person and a place (subject + context). The photographer has given us the luxury of some space to wander around this photo and at the same time has reduced the scene to its (not "it is") essential elements. If the frame were close-cropped, as some have suggested then how would we get the impression of a vast empty space? There is also the juxtaposition of the woman (soft, warm, yielding) to the metal column (cold, hard, unmoving). This is accentuated by the fact that the woman is facing slightly away from the column. One possible cause for the photo looking out of level is that the floor may have a slight built in slope. This building may have been converted from another use where the floor was sloped for drainage. This is a great photo for a lot of reasons. Color, composition, framing, use of negative space, juxtaposition, form, texture, maybe even some humor. The column seems to be competing for attention and in fact is more ornamented and colorful than the woman, but she does not seem to notice or care. I can't figure out what she is holding in her hand, but it picks up on the red in the fire extinguisher. Yes, simple brilliant and way cool. Link to comment
mallik 0 Posted November 13, 2002 Solace is what she finds in that vast emptiness to keep her on HER subject of interest. I think the beauty of this picture is its emptiness. You have shown a great composition in this everyday situation. Can the title be 'Woman in her Own World'? By the way, any more pictures from Leica Minilux? Mallik. Link to comment
