Hi Christian, You always make it to MY favorite spots. Is this from the Grove just past Barton Flats??? If so, as an FYI, it is the largest Aspen Grove in the State of California. I shot it a few years ago in late October. With a light breeze it is BEAUTIFUL in there. I am looking forward to a day there again this fall, thanks to a 'wakeup call' from you. I was just on the DESERT side of San Gorgonio last weekend.

Yes, that's where it was. Trust me, don't pack your bags... there's nothing going on there yet! I had to struggle to find one that was turning. I would give it several weeks.

Hmmm... largest in California? I thought it was a tiny little grove. To make sure we're talking about the same one. It was near the turnoff to Hart Bar Campground, then about 3 miles or so on dirt roads to the trailhead. And, calling them "roads" is a being polite.

Yes. Thats the one. And the trailhead leads you down a slight incline into the grove.A Ranger at Barton Flats told me about it 5-6 years ago.It was from them that I got the 'largest Aspen grove in Ca' info.

I personally have never seen more than scattered Aspens in Ca. But, you get around more than I do.

My 'inquiring mind', now needs to know. I am on my way to DV,Zion and Bryce this am, but as soon as I am back, I am looking up that info. Great pic anyway! Glad to see I haven't missed the color there this year.

Found this on 'Trails.com'.........

Fish Creek Aspen Grove

This short but rewarding hike leads through conifer forest on the northeastern edge of the San Gorgonio Wilderness to southern California?s largest grove of quaking aspen.

BUT...it says SOUTHERN California. :)

And, in my searches, someone may find THIS tidbit interesting.....

An Aspen Grove is considered to be ONE living organism.

Example-The General Sherman Tree is the largest TREE in the world. It is a one stemmed living organism. BUT, there is an Aspen Grove in Utah(47,000 stems), that is the largest living 'MULTI STEMMED ORGANISM'. An Aspen Grove is made up of Aspen STEMS all connected at the roots.

MORE...' In California, an interesting population of aspen exists in the San Bernardino Mountains. Aspen skip from the Sierra Nevada to the mountains in Baja California, with only this single population found along Fish Creek in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Thorne (1988) calls it the "least known plant community in the southern California mountains"
