Thanks Ada. The 'look' you see is because the colour version did not seem to work - too many strong colours - so I tried playing with it in PS.

I really like the high key treatment as this shot has a lot of depth of content. The contrast between the people on the beach, the one in the coat, the ones in the street is quite interesting. Nice emphasis with desaturation. There is nothing like a great wide-angle shot imo... Nicely conceived!

I'm trying to catch up on some of the stuff that I've missed during the first few weeks of school! I usually spend my first few weeks taking pictures of the kids and working with those ... but I don't like to put those online (we've talked about that!) So - it's nice to be back and looking at your stuff! One of my colleauges just started on photo.net and I've pointed him your way ... I think that he'd like your stuff! His name is Matt Hubbard. I'm sure you'll treat him well. :-)

 

Anyway - I love the treatment that you gave this. I also like the way you've been choosing to use your wide angle! But my favorite thing about this picture is the person in the black coat running away on the left side of the picture. Makes it look like an Americanized version of early 1900's England in the movies (like Sherlock Holmes or something!)

Colin, I spend a short time each year photographing Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay and Ulverston on the other side. But living in Canada makes it hard to get a lot of time there. Your portfolio is making me want to jump on a plane and go straight to Robin Hoods Bay. You have an absolute brilliant portfolio. Congratulations. Is this particular photograph altered in photoshop?

Lou Ann, the guy on the left looks a bit Victorian doesn't he. As it was raining when I took this I guess he was making a dash for cover somewhere.

 

Leon, glad you like these shots. This is a stitched photo of 4 frames. I did not particularly like the colour version as the shot is busy enough already and the colour made it worse. So I tried (using PS) to narrow the range of colours in the shot to black, brown,yellow and white to simplify it.

Great angle. Seems to show everything and everyone. I like the muted colours, adds to the atmosphere of the imminent squall. The repetition of the mauve colour really brings all the elements together.

Magical shot. Good wide angle comp, plenty of detail interest in the various things going on, and the treatment works well. The only thing that lets is down slightly IMO is the way the treatment has affected the sky, particularly top left, but I realise this kind of photoshopping is very much a personal taste thing.

 

Great image though.
