Like many other photographers I tried to capture the Leonid meteor

storm. I ventured out to nearby National Park in Western Australia

which was meant to be an ideal location for the showers. Went there

two days before the event to scout the area and night skys. Thought

that the interesting rock formations would provide a nice background.

It was beautiful the day before with perfectly clear skies and the

moon hiding in the horizon. I got this shot on the Nikon. I had a 2

35mm and a large format camera set up. Unfortunately on the actual

night the clouds came in and there was spectecular lightning storms

and rain. Waiting for large format negs/trannys and hoping to get

some good lightning shots. I did manage however to drive 200km away

(avoiding many a live kangaroo on the road) to a small rural area and

got a couple of 35mm shots on film. The actual display itself was

quite a spectacle. At one stage there was at least 1-2 visible

meteors per second for 10-20 sec intervals.

Few star trail shots work really well. Yours does. I really like the composition and the exposure. The few clouds in the sky really add to the image, and the low horizon and the placement of the "center" of the stars do as well. I can tell that a lot of careful planning went into the making of this shot.

The Pinnacles are already a great sight in their own right...the star trails just adds to their wonder. Beautiful image of one of my favourite places in Western Australia.

I do astronomy, just not in the Southern Hemisphere, and I'm pretty sure that there are no clouds in this picture. The two fuzzy spots are our closest galaxies, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds.

Cool Picture.
