pjduncan 0 Posted September 10, 2005 This was the first time I had seen this type of flower. Please let me know what you think. How does the DOF seem? Please also check out my portfolio. Thanks for viewing. Link to comment
jam50 0 Posted September 10, 2005 DOF seems just right to me. This is a really nice image, as are all of the images in your portfolio. Well done. Link to comment
susan stone 0 Posted September 10, 2005 I think this is a lovely and delicate composition, but I think I would like it better if all the flowers were in sharp focus, the blurred background works well. Link to comment
pjduncan 0 Posted September 10, 2005 It's strange, in a way I agree with the comments about DOF, which is why I asked about it. This was a shooting compromise of being limited to hand held in relatively low light for macro work. Otherwise I probably would have shot having all flowers in focus. However, getting to the strange part, I find that I'm oddly attracted to this image and am quite surprised that this is one of my highest rated images on PN. Is it possible that this shooting compromise, while seeming to be distracting, lends some complexity or depth to the image that holds one's interest more? Why do I really like a photo that technically I think I shouldn't? If there is anyone that is SURE they like it BETTER the way it is vs having had all flowers sharply in field... is there any way you could describe why? Link to comment
jam50 0 Posted September 12, 2005 Sure thing Phillip. In my maybe inexperienced and somewhat naieve opinion, I think that if all the flowers were in focus and the background was not, you'd have these two rather flattish planes standing apart and not really working together. The way you have it here, the out of focus flowers help tie the entire thing together and give it a less harsh sense of depth. There can be such a thing as too much contrasting DOF. The unsharp flowers help draw my eye further back from the flowers in focus and say "Hi there, we're a real bunch of flowers and not a cardboard cutout that Phillip stuck up in front of a blurry background." (Of course, this entire monologue could also explain why I'm not a professional. Sigh). Does that help any? Link to comment
bruxe 0 Posted January 21, 2006 I believe if all flowers are within the DOF will make this photo more complicated. For me this is just right. 7/6 Link to comment
LindaM 2 Posted May 24, 2008 this is lovely. the shallow dof works very well IMO. fascinating flower! do you know waht it is? got to go now. my girls are dragging me out the door to go shopping, but i'll be back. you have some really fine work! Link to comment
pjduncan 0 Posted May 25, 2008 Linda, Thanks for the very nice complement. Unfortunately, I don't know the name. It was at the Golden Gate Park Conservatory of Flowers and they have very few label signs for their plants and this appear and disappear fairly often. I do remember this was in the room that was fairly hot/humid, so it is a tropical plant. It's hard to tell the scale, but these were quite small. Link to comment
