bjorke 0 Posted November 22, 2001 seems to be begging for a caption... has a lot of charm alone though Link to comment
cedarbough 0 Posted November 23, 2001 Not sure what you mean by a caption. If you mean an explanation... In Myanma you can often see people (mostly women, but men as well) who wear a sort of traditional make-up on their faces. The make-up is a paste mixed up in the morning and usually applied only once, before leaving home. This photo was taken quite early, so the make-up hasn't flaked off much. The make-up has several benefits. It is a sunscreen, a skin conditioner and to the eyes of the locals, a beautifier. This woman is wearing more than most people wear. Many people wear simply a large swash across each cheek. Others get artistic, with dots on one side, or a stripe down the nose. Link to comment
philip_coggan 0 Posted January 30, 2002 Cedar - yr focal plane is extremely shallow - wld be better w/both eyes in focus. Also, the cheek fades into the background - better against a dark background. This sounds overly critical, but the expression is so uninhibited and the mood so nice, it's a pity that (in my opinion) it has these flaws. Fixable next time, next visit, no doubt. The paste is called thanaka, as you doubtless know. It's supposed to be cooling. Burmese women wear their sarong in a simple wrap-around style, Burmese men bunch it in front of their navels. Never could get them to admit that this had anything to do with differences in male and female anatomy. Link to comment
