Hunter Thompson's Ashes

DB_Gallery

This shot was assembled much like the structure it self, gradually with lots of care. It is one take, no layers and a whole hell of a lot of production on site. Canon 20D, 45 seconds, ISO 800, Tungsten balanced, 85mm @ 1.8. Light is two assistants with 25lb spot lights on radios, one rotated to the front and gave it a wipe to fill. The glowing peyote button in the center was turned back on in the last 1/2 second of exposure for reasons of keeping it in a re-produceable range. RAW overexposed by one stop pulled 1.5 for unreal noise reduction. Oh yeah, the great access given to me by an enthusiastic Anita Thompson before they take it down today.

Jonny Depp's 153 foot creation often called the Tower of Power Launched the "Good Doctor's" ashes over 300 feet into the air. More than a week after Hunter S. Thompson's ashes were fired into the air via fireworks, the light from the peyote button lights up the valley. The resulting ISO 800 file is simply magical. I have been working on this story for weeks now, the majority of the images I will keep out of public domain, but this one, I just had to share.

Please view it in the slightly larger version as it does not show the strange compression artifacts.
