edmund hayes 0 Posted November 17, 2001 This is a pictute taken at night of the USS Providence at her home port of Groton Ct. No tripod was used (sure did need one) I just pressed the camera against a fence post and held still. Boat does look small here but it is actually 360 feet long. I thing the night lighting provides a special feeling in this picture. Taken with a Nikon Coolpix 995 Link to comment
stevemontanino 0 Posted November 17, 2001 you should really consider using Tungsten film or a seriously strong blue filter to try and get this closer to day light effects... Link to comment
adam_preble 0 Posted November 17, 2001 I agree with Stephen - some heavy blues could go a long way in this photograph. I've taken a number of evening shots with this same amber/reddish look which I find pretty undesirable. I have zero experience with filters, though, so I can't provide any guidance there. More on the composition/subject side... I find it helpful to get a perspective on the subject that maybe other people haven't thought of, or they wouldn't normally see. Of course, you probably can't row up alongside the Providence and have a few shots up close or from low in the water, but... do what you can. Link to comment
alex_hawley 0 Posted November 18, 2001 Pardon me if I get a bit sentimental but I spent many nights on the same piers. I can vouch that the color seen in the photo is very authentic so I would not suggest any color correction. Good shot Edmund. This might not stir any high reactions from those who rate only flowers and nudes with high marks, but to me, it is beautiful. I was never assigned to Providence, but still knew her well. Thanks for posting it. Alex Hawley, USS City of Corpus Christi (SSN 705) Plankowner, USS Archerfish (SSN 678) Link to comment
kc 0 Posted November 19, 2001 The color of the light and the scene itself makes me expect to see the crew boarding at night for some secret mission. I like it. Link to comment
neil_h1 0 Posted December 3, 2006 I spent alot of nights guarding the old girl in the early nineties. The light is just the way i remember it. She was a great boat with an awesome crew. My best memories are onboard her !! love the picture !! Link to comment
