how can I improve this?

Bob, A larger image may yield a better idea as to what to do here but here goes my thoughts. Using PhotoShop, pass the image through NeatImage to reduce grain/noise in the background using an edge mask to protect detail in the flower and bird. Select the highlights and convert the selection to a layer set as Multiply adjusting as needed to salvage some highlite detail and reduce contrast slightly. Use an edgesharpening action or plugin such as Fred Miranda's Intellisharp.
