Oh, what a welcoming blinding light that showers the beautiful fields with life & energy. The signpost seems to point me to some place interesting.

Welcome back, Colin

As with the Flightless Birds shot, I think this is another case where the vignetting actually fits the composition. The rounded corners tend to draw the eye better towards centered compositions. The vignetting, clouds and signpost draw the eye into the Sun, but the light filtering between the heather fans out to the viewer in an embrace.

Reminds me a little of The Pastoral Symphony, in feeling if not in location.

Thanks Denis, I agree - over exposure (and under- can be great artistic devices in the right places.

Gaetan, thanks!

Cherlyn, thanks, it was a good holiday. The light is as you say the main subject here and what I was trying to capture.

Steohen, thanks! The Pastoral Symphony eh? Well I'm happy that you were reminded by this of the work of such a monumental genius as LvB. I'm honoured! I agree about vignetting but from the comments that is not a universal view with some preferring a more conventional looking sky.

Colin, this is a great shot. You know, I took the sign for a cross at first, was impressed of how the sun exploded its light in front of it. There is mystic in this composition.

front light can produce great effect like here, great shot. I hold the nd grad in my hand while taking the shot to avoid vignetting problems. works fine with me (steady hand required if you shoot without a tripod)

Paula, thanks! I admit I did have thoughts about directions and light when I took this.

Hans, I agree about hand-holding the filter works best with the ultra wide type lens and is also quicker than fiddling with the holder.

Thanks for clearing that up Colin, I guess the fact that the lens is substantially wide-angle means that the shadow is going out the side of the frame somewhere and presumably partly hidden by the heather. I personally don't like the obvious vignetting but if you're happy that's all that matters :)

I love that this image gives a wonderful impression of the place where you were flying kites ... and seems to be completely appropriate for the activity!
