I'm trying to decide whether to expand the currently limited scope of my Peripheral Vision project to include less stark scenery photographed in the 'thirds' arrangement. Your thoughts on this subject would be helpful.

This was taken with the smell of bushfire smoke in the air. The sun rose about 5 minutes after this was taken. The smoke haze continued to glow in the weak sunlight for about half an hour after sunrise.

Leigh, this is great one. Not like many others in this series, the mid-layer is very well present. The fg is very good too. Even the background layer is as usual because of the weather, it doesn't look weak. I like the crop and the impact is strong. well done work.

A stunning image Leigh - it shimmers and moves and the flow of compositional elements is excellent. I don't know how it fits with the more austere ones, but this seems like a direction worth exploring regardless to see where it goes.

Leigh, I don't dislike this (infact I think on its own its a lovely image), but it doesn't work for me in the same way as your other 'peripheral' shots. I see the parts not the whole, my eye drawn always to the top right, where the surf seems disapointingly truncated. HTH.

Leigh, This is does for certain have the elements. I think for me I have to agree with the previous comment. The waves are drawing my interest, which pull from the rest of the image. It would be great if you could post a larger image. I'm always intrested in your stuff and the details that you get from large format. W

Leigh, nice work in itself, does not look (imo )compatible to your peripheral series. beautiful delicate light colors amid the blue of the water, the white blob on the right hs.is drawing my eye to it, because it is not in harmony with the rest of the image, the fg, has a nice texture. Pnina

Leigh, this one is really beautiful, but IMHO it definitely doesn't fit in the Peripheral vision series. The composition might be similar, but the subjects are not. (Though it might go with the #1) The flow of water is more dramatic, and the cracked rocks do add a bit here too. I'd suggest you start a new series here... Jiri

Leigh .. the larger version certainly sells me on the merits of this shot! Such incredible color and detail ... I'm envious :-)

Thanks Leigh. The foreground is terrific and those waves are interesting as well. I hope to see a new series from this. - Sean

Very nice enlarged Leigh. The white blob is still atracting my eye to it....

That can be a new interesting series.

Leigh, yes seeing a larger version of this one sells it to me too. The only room for improvement that I see lies with the darker region on the right. I wonder if lifting those levels a little is worth experimenting with? It also seems slighlty tight between that area and the rocks out in the water. It looks like you're already shooting from a fair way up, so I'm guessing a higher vantage point might not have been an option. Interestingly, the tension disappears when I crop about a third of the foreground (which results in a comp that is closer to a thirds in my view), but the cost of losing the nice glow there is probably a bit too high. All minor points though - it's still a wonderful shot, and easily one of my favourites of your more recent works.

Leigh, I really don't see this one integrating into your Periphery series; at least not how I have conceived it to date. The series as I see it, is about the subtle transitions of beach, sea, and sky all taken in equal measure.

Incidentally, I like this image very much. It's strong enough that it really stands alone.

Leigh, This is a terrific shot. I love the detail and geometry of the foreground and the overall color pallete. Like Pnina, I'm a little distracted by the very light area. It's not enough to spoil the shot though.

I don't think this image would work well with your Peripheral Vision project unless you included a few transitional images to link it with the others.

As David wrote, this one is strong enough to stand on it's own. I may have also been tempted to shoot some abstract frames with the foreground and the water, eliminating the sky.

Thanks again everyone.

Richard, I did think about dodging the dark right side but decided to leave it as it was. It's consistent with the sky, which is probably why it was darker in the first place :-) It's amazing how much that smoke haze in the sky suppressed the light, and how it glowed in these nice colours. I can only imagine what Velvia would have made of it...

Laurie and Pnina, I acknowledge your point about the bright pool. It's really a technical fault -- being under the grad line, the water is artificially brighter than the sky, which can't really happen of course. I will burn it in for the print.

Cheers to all.

I would leave as is, I think it's a wonderful composition and the larger view really shows off the talent you have with capturing light.

For those who mentioned wanting to see this in print, Leigh's prints are available at www.leighperry.com (sorry if active link doesn't work through this page).

His print quality is excellent, the prices are very modest, and the shipping is fast. Why not buy one?

Leigh seems to have become associated with a gallery or two. Congratulations.

This image seems to be outside the parameters of your "Peripheral" collection. I disagree with critics who find some particular element out of balance (I see no "white blob", for instance and would not lighten the black stone at right).

I am curious if the prints available from the galleries are ink on paper or light sensitive photo emulsion type prints. Some of the colors I see in images on your (nicely constructed) website appear to be so brilliant as to be out of gamut, at least for the inkjet printers I'm familiar with... while I imagine photographs optically printed from a chrome or neg would be pretty spectacular.

I have an old Linhof Tech III that has informed me it wants to go for a walk (I showed it your website. Big mistake.)... t
