I have no idea what dsc 420 is, but I believe it came with a software for a Windows version that accepts USB (not Windows NT or older)?, and most likely you are connecting via USB port?

You need to Uninstall the software that was installed for this camera, and re install again. Ask any kid how to do it. Reboot the computer after the Uninstall is done. Make sure that when you install the software, the camera is not connected to the computer YET. After software installation you will need to reboot the computer again, and then plug the camera to the USB port. Basically these are steps that should have been written up in a Quick installation guide, or any documentation for the software. If this does not work, you may need to do hardware setup manually in Windows XP, or W2000, in whatever Windows 98 you have. Story too long to cover here.
