allen_gunn1
Hi folks, I just played with a 1D mkII. WOW! What a sweet camera. I was wondering if anyone else has? Is it like the 1Ds in terms of the menu and weight? If so has has any one had any issues? I love a lot about it. The two things I did not care for were, the weight and the non intuitive menu. I have two 10D's and a D60. Both are fairly easy to figure out. I have a mkII on order and am concerned these might slow me down in a wedding or other event. Any thoughts? BTW, I was not a store, so I was unable to compare the two cameras. Thanks, Allen
the_macman
That's plain laziness :) The weight should appear on every web site which publishes its specs and by now, there should be tons of them. As for the menu, I don't know but I really doubt Canon made some changes. The 1D and 1Ds have an interface which is damn close to the D60 and 10D. If you're ok with those, don't worry about the other ones. You don't care about figuring out :) You care about using them. Even if "figuring out" is difficult, it doesn't take long anyway and you get used very soon. Tip: pull out the users manual :)
fotografz
The D30, D60 and 10D are indeed semi no-brainer cameras. But the 1DMKII should only take a few hours to get use to if it is like the 1Ds in user interface. I use the 1Ds for weddings and have never been slowed down by the camera. allen_gunn1
Thanks Marc Mac I dont usually look at the weight. Seems you do. The menu is similiar, the navigation and button pushing is very different. Mac tell me what you think when you get yours.
the_macman
Now that's the mentality of a 5-yr old... Listen everybody: If you do not own a particular item, NEVER express an opinion on photo.net about it... as knowledge is useless unless there is practice, apparently. Mr. Atkins, put that into the regulations :) Sure man, wait until everyone receives his order so that there will be enough photo.net users owning their own... By July you should get some answers to some questions, maybe August. Good luck.
the_macman
I don't look at the weight because I don't care. I was simply suggesting where to look, because you expressed that you care. Give me your fax number. I'll draw the concept on a paper if you can't grasp it here.
the_macman
Never convey information you own about a particular piece of equipment if you don,t own it... That way we'll be lucky if we have 10 new answer postings in a week on this forum :)

jamiew
Allen. My only suggestion is to practice with the camera before you first wedding with it. but being a wedding photographer you already know that ;)
carl smith
Can anyone tell me about the 1Ds Mark II? I thought the menu system was really confusing and poorly designed. Anyone with any experience?, because I didn't actually use the camera.
jespdj
Carl, there is no such thing as the 1Ds Mark II. There may be a successor to the 1Ds some time in the future, and people have been speculating about it, but it's not there yet and nobody even knows if it's going to be called "1Ds Mark II". The camera being discussed above is the 1D Mark II, which is the successor to the 1D.
chrisjb
Hi theres a diferrence between pro and am my wife hates the 1ds because of weight and sticks to the D30 I love em after years of carrying hassies these cameras are a dream learn to use them properly the speed of the 1d mk 2 is next to none its not a toy and has more going than a 10d but thats what you pay for
allen_gunn1
Carl, Get the number right first. Second, I only had about a half hour to use the camera. Mac, Never said I owned it, just said I got to play with it. Not in a studio or even outside, just in a reviewer's office. I thought I would ask if any one else was suprised by the weight, thats all. Since I was asking about the 1Ds (in terms of the menu), Mac if you don't own then don't answer. A little advice, count to ten, take a deep breath and relax. the_macman
>>>> Mac if you don't own then don't answer. You're plain stupid. Everyone reads dpreview :)
the_macman
Anytime you have a question about some equipment I don't own, you'd better be sure I'd answer if I know the answer... and if I don't know the answer, if I feel like, I'd say what I think that the answer would be and explain the logic behind my suppositions. And even w/o owning the machine, my answers have rarely been wrong. Because I'm a guy who knows how to read :-) For instance: I don't ask for a machine's weight here on the forum, because I know where to get the info... that kind of thing. The topic about the EF 1200/5.6 comes from time to time and ppl participate. Why? Because it's interesting. That's what a forum is about, buddy. Sharing info. Try to understand the principle behind it or ignore me because you better believe it: I will answer whenever I feel like answering :) whether I own the machine or not. Get used to it. greg_smith8
I own a 10D and I used the 1D Mark II for a total of about 1/2 hour at PMA. I figured out the menu system after about a minute of play and found it inferior to that of the 10D. However, most items you change often have an actual button or buttons assigned to them (white balance, file type/quality, etc) and most of the goodies in the non-intuitive menu system won't be touched very often. I have a feeling that when mine arrives I'll do some test shots for things like Noise Reduction and JPEG compression/tone, set those parameters in the menus, and not touch them again. the_macman
Greg :) You heard the guy: you can't talk about somehting you don't own. One minut of play? Yeah, that's reasonable. Of course, you gotta admit that someone who strongly believes that only owners should talk about specific items, will necessarly have more trouble figuring out simple things such as the navigation of intiutive menus and he'd need more than one minte... I'd say more like 4-5 weddings.
allen_gunn1
I am not the one who said "if you dont own it dont comment" that was you Mac. You stated it as if it were some golden rule. I am still new to photo.net. So please forgive me. I just hope your blood pressure is ok Mac, these were only questions.
g_w2
Allen, Thought your question was valid. Was looking forward to more responses. Think macman's seven tirades might have scared people away. Macman, Your behavior is annoying. Please control yourself, or don't participate in these forums.
gary_voth3
Allen, your questions were fine. As I read it, you made an observation that the camera felt heavy to you. It was NOT a request for someone to tell you the weight of the camera in grams... I don't really get the reason for the other guy's rants.
the_macman
>>>> Is it like the 1Ds in terms of the menu and weight? Go read the specs. They're in about 100 000 places on the web.
primoz
I just had 1DmkII for test yesterday when shooting European Championship in gymnastics and to be honest it's not that much difference compared to 1D. 40 frame buffer makes it a bit easier to work sometimes, and 8MP gives you some more reserve for cropping. There seems to be a bit less noise with higher ISO (1600). For me it has only two real cool things. One is zoom on LCD so you can check if photos are sharp on LCD already and you don't need to wait for download to computer. The other is use of SD card so you can have 256MB SD card there just in case if you get full CF card at wrong moment. They changed layout of menues a bit so it takes forever before you find format CF for first time :) And they added some more settings for jpeg quality and stuff.<br> Otherwise if you didn't have problem with 4MP before I'm not really sure if it's worth all the problems. And btw... all this is 1DmkII compared to 1D. Not to some 10D, D30, D60 and I don't know what else.
