How to work the 10D with a Metz 60 CT-4?

Im trying to understand the best way to use the 10D with the Metz

60 CT-4. I got a used Metz 60 from a friend and it is working just

fineI heard that its a very good flash and since Im not very

happy with the 550EX wanted to give this one a try. My question is

simple - is it possible to work the 10D and the Metz in TTL mode. I

want to use the Metz in a few wedding that I have coming and I do

prefer to have an automatic flash. I know that I can set the Metz

manually to work with the 10D but thats not what Im looking for. I

went to Samys here in LA and was told that this is not possibleI

was told that the adapters/modules that Metz has will not work with

the 10D since Canons technology is proprietary. I would love to

hear back from people that use this setup. Is there a way to have

the camera talk to the flash? Thank.

The only Metz flashes that will work TTL with the 10D are the 54MZ3 and 54MZ4. And from my experience (with D60 and 1D) even they work like crap, the non-TTL autoflash gives much more consistent exposures. I've got a little 220EX and it gives much better TTL exposures than the Metz (and yes, I've got the M not M2 module). I was poised to get a 550EX until I found out it *only* works TTL, there's no autoflash sensor as there are on the Nikon strobes. $2000-3000 for a camera and I'm reduced to using the same flash technology as with my 1969 Nikon F. Great.

Actually, no TTL flash will work with the EOS 10D. Only E-TTL is compatible with the 10D's Evaluative flash meter. The 10D uses a preflash to meter flash exposure. TTL meters light reflected off the film at the moment of exposure, so obviously it can't work with DSLRs.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

10D and good compact flash $2,000. Lenses for 10D at least $1000, more like 2000, pref 3000.

550 flash $300!

I think you need to buy a 550 and read photonotes.org section on EOS Flashes. When you buy high end gear a certain amount of homework is required to take advantage of it's high end performace.

Respectfully...you have not done that and accordingly you'll more than likely get 'point and shoot' quality until you do spend the time to REALLY learn about it!

It's not like a high end Lexus. It's more like a race car. If you do not know how to drive it to it's potential you'll place dead last in the line up!

I didn't specify "E-TTL" in place of "TTL" in my post because I was not assuming the original poster was an ignorant newbie, since he does wedding photography.

I use the metz 60 & the metz 45 with my 10D. They are better flash units to use

professionally than the canon units. To use them though, you have to set the

camera manually, and select the aperature on the flash unit. The flash

exposure is very reliable with the metz units. One thing that I find with the metz

& the 10D is that they overexpose unless you compensate with the iso setting.

ie..camera iso at 400 flash at 800, or select the aperature one stop less than

the camera ..camera at f8 flash at f5.6. As far as the modules are concerned,

they don't work with the 10D, you have to connect the metz 60 to the camera

pc socket on the side of the body.
