edward_nolan
Can anyone recommend the best time to catch the dogwoods in bloom in Yosemite valley. Also best areas to look. Thinkin of going out soon Thanks
milton_messenger
Edward, early May is prime dogwood season especially at Fern Spring in Yosemite. You can get nice shots with the Fern Spring as a background with the dogwoods overlooking the water causing reflections into the creek. There are also tiny waterfals in this area as well. Pohono Bridge is near Fern Spring (1/10th of a mile away) and offers spectacular views of dogwoods. A wonderful resource dedicated entirely to photographing Yosemite is titled,"The Photographer's Guide to Yosemite" by Michael Frye published by the Yosemite Association. It gives detailed descriptions of where to place your tripod, what seasons are best for individual views, technique, and lots of helpful resources etc. It even breaks up the year into the best spots for each of the 4 seasons. I highly recommend this book. It cost me only $7.95 about a year ago. I'll be in Yosemite with my 4X5 for 4 days during the first week of May. Maybe I'll see you there at the Ansel Adams Gallery? Try not to miss Yosemite in spring when the waterfalls are flowing and the flowers are blooming with spectacular beauty. Don't be "thinkin of going out soon", but just go there! You will be grateful you did. miltonmessenger@yahoo.com
ken_miller4
I leave for Yosemite in 10 days. Bit early for the Dogwoods, but the waterfalls should be active :-)

hugh_sakols
Yesterday I saw my first dogwood flower of the year just west of the old diversion dam on hwy 140. It is still too early but in the next couple of weeks things should start happening. The redbud lower down has already done its thing and is leafing out. I would look on the lower (western) end of the merced river and around Curry Village. From what I have heard, a couple of flowers are already out at Curry Village. Another great place to look is in the Merced and Toulomne Groves ( This won't happen until much later). It has been an early spring. In Yosemite Valley Dogwoods don't usually peak untill late May. edward_nolan
Thanks Milton:Appreciate the info, I ordered Michael Fray's book from Amazon. Will take it with me and give it a go. Planning on going May 1-4.I normally shoot 67 pentax, but bought an old crown graflex to see what 4x5 is all about. I also normally do desert landscapes, (about 25 years worth) but am looking for some new digs. The dogwoods are such a great subject that I thought I would go up to Yosemite and just focus on that (along with all the other shutterbugs). If you are going to be in the valley on that weekend let me know, we may run into each other. Thanks again.
milton_messenger
Edward, I will be in Yosemite from April 29 thru May 2nd. I'll be staying in Curry Village. I'll give you my cell number if you want to hook-up. I have each morning and evening shoots planned but have free time during the middle of the day for the Ansel Adams Gallery etc. See you there. dimbulbsetting
There is also a small horse trail to Mirror Lake that starts before the bridge (Tenaya Bridge?) and is opposite the road that most people take to Mirror Lake. It's quiet, picturesque and has dogwoods that overhang the river, rocks, etc. Just watch out for the horsey poop. :-)
