alex_j
I'd like some feedback on buying a Sigma 20mm F1.8 EX DG Aspherical Lens lens for use with a D100, or in fact any DSLR with DX format sensor. I've seen some good reviews on this lens, and somewhat aware of the pros and cons.... for example this page:
http://www.photo.net/ezshop/product?product_id=1184
However, that's with a 35mm SLR. But with 1.5 cropping DX format sensor, that 20mm becomes more a like using a 30mm lens with 35mm film SLR. Anyone using this lens with Nikon DX format DSLR? Other pros and cons.
I should mention, that I may get a 35mm film SLR soon, so while I've got nothing against DX lenses, the ability to also use with 35mm is a consideration.
Thanks in advance...
Lex
P.S. not wanting start a sensor format war thread, just looking for opinions about a lens. dayton_p._strickland1
Alex, I purchased this lens when I bought my D100 back in November 2002. I kept the lens for about a month and traded it in on the Nikon 20/2.8 and have never looked back. The lens was way too big for me and the results mediocre. Digital requires the best glass possible. If you are picky you will want to look at the Nikon glass first.
simon_kemp2
I haven't used the 20mm but I frequently use the 15mm 2.8 fisheye Sigma on my D100 with superb results, it's really an excellent lens with it's fisheye effect tamed by the 1.5x digital factor. However I would agree that, if you can afford it, it is better to go with the Nikon glass.
alex_j
Thanks for the feedback. Since asking the question, I have also seen a Sigma AF, 14mm f3.5 and a Nikon 20mm AF f2.8 lens (both near new) for sale, so have some other options to consider.
