al_kaplan1
Nathan Benn. He's been with National Geographic, and he's headed up Magnum. You can get a bunch of references to him on google. My interest in him started when he was 16, still attending North Miami Sr. High and shooting for the local weekly, The North Dade Journal. He had a Pentax and was drooling over Nikons. He did eventually get a Leic M also, while still in Miami. He printed his portfolio that he used to get into the University of Miami in my darkroom. He did some stuff there that helped him get hired by National Geographic, too.

lee_shively
Although not necessarily under-rated in the world at large, this forum seldom or never brings up Wright Morris, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Emmet Gowin, Walker Evans, Wynn Bullock, Nicholas Nixon, Robert Adams, Imogene Cunningham and numerous others I can't recall off-hand. They're all my heros.
Alex_Es
Disfarmer, absolutely! Brilliant portrait photographer. Also Mark Cohen of Wilkes-Barr, Penn.
tom h.
I think Brett Weston goes largely and shamefully unnoticed. His Fathers work helped define modernist/minimalist photography, and he never really got out from under the name, although his own work was in fact (IMHO) superior to Edwards. Go down three pages and check out Ein Trister Tag, 1956. I picked up Toni Schneiders PHOTOGRAPHIEN 1946-1980 (Schirmer/Mosel, Munich) in a used bookstore too.
