Epson 2200 prematurely aborts job in Mac OS 10.3 (Panther)

Recommended Posts

My Epson 2200 printed fine using the photo quality option under Mac OS 10.2

but when I installed 10.3 it stopped working. It prints the first 1/4 inch or so

then the print monitor goes to "Jobs Stopped" and the printer stops printing

and ejects the unfinished print. If I print using the plain paper option and lower

quality it works fine. Any suggestions?

Subject: Response to Epson 2200 prematurely aborts job in Mac OS 10.3 (Panther)

I had this problem with my Epson 780. It can be a memory leak or just not enough memory supplied to the printer.

With my windows system, I had a memory leak so that when the printer was printing it wasn't letting go of the cached memory (the image was about 100MB), so by the middle of the print job my computer had ~10 MB ram free left. The larger the image, the earlier in the print job it stopped since smaller images need less memory. Same problem, different OS. I fixed mine through a patch from microsoft. You might try downloading all updates for 10.3, or allocating more memory to the printer.

I have a Fuji PG4000II with drivers compatible up to 10.2.4. The Mac folks told me

that 10.3 had a complete overhaul of the printer functions and that numerous drivers

for 10.2 would not retain all of their compatibility. This is very real for the Fuji, the

computer knows it's there but no software programs can find it. Now I have to wait for

Fuji to release the driver upgrade and they aren't fast. I saw no driver updates for 10.3

on the Epson site, you might want to drop them a note.

Gary, this isn't an 'inherent' problem; my 2200 is OK with Panther. After you check out the memory issue mentioned above - if that doesn't fix it - try deleting & reinstalling the latest version of the Epson drivers.

I did, however, switch from Firewire to USB when I installed Panther, because I'd read about people having problems using the Firewire driver. If that's what you're using, try changing.

I had similar problems and worse. I tried a number of solutions including gimp-print. I eventually contacted Epson via e-mail and received the following reply. I followed their instructions to the letter. It worked! I was stunned. Here they are:

To correct the issue you are experiencing, we will perform a complete

removal of the files and reinstall the driver.

1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE

2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder

3. Double click on the PRINTERS folder

4. Drag the EPSON folder to the trash can

Now remove the plugin from the Receipts Folder as well.

1. Double click on the MAC HARD DRIVE

2. Double click on the LIBRARY folder

3. Double click on the RECEIPTS folder

4. Drag the Epson plugin to the trash

*NOTE* If you receive an access denied error message, this indicates that

you do not have root access. You will need to contact Apple for assistance

on obtaining Root Access.

Please follow the steps below to download and install your printer in OS X:

a) Go to www.epson.com, click on the North American portion of the map.

b) Click DRIVERS and DOWNLOADS, then select INK JET under the PRINTERS

heading.

c) Select your printer from the list.

d) Select the most current driver for OS 10.X (epson 10686)

e) Save the file to your DESKTOP.

1. After download is complete, double click the icon that appears on your

desktop, then click CONTINUE, then CONTINUE again, then OK on the

INSTALLATION WAS SUCCESSFUL screen.

2. Open the new folder created by the extraction process. It will appear

something like epson1XXXX (X represents a variable number here).

3. When you open this folder, you will find a file with a .DMG extension -

double-click it. This will create another icon on the desktop with the name

of your printer.

4. Double-click to open the DISK IMAGE file. Here, you will see an

INSTALLER file - double-click this icon to start the installation process.

5. The next menu will prompt you to ensure that you have Administrator

Rights to install the printer driver. Click on the lock (if necessary) and

enter your password.

6. The next menu will be the one that initiates the installation process.

Click CONTINUE, then CONTINUE again at the SOFTWARE AGREEMENT window, then CONTINUE again, then AGREE.

7. You will be prompted to select a disk to install the printer to. Select

the OS X drive or partition and click CONTINUE.

8. In the next window that appears, click INSTALL.

9. You should now be informed that the computer needs to be restarted after installation; click CONTINUE INSTALLATION here. The driver will now be installed and the system optimized. Restart the computer when prompted.

10. After the computer restarts, open your PRINT CENTER (you can open your print center by opening your HARD DRIVE, APPLICATIONS, UTILITY, PRINT CENTER [PRINT SET-UP UTILITY]). Make sure your printer is powered on at this point.

11. If your printer is listed, simply close the print center and try to print. If not, click the ADD button.

12. In the window that appears, select EPSON USB from the drop-down menu, then select your printer and hit ADD.

13. Try printing.

I tried some of the fixes listed above, memory leaks and the long email from

the Epson guy, none worked but I just found the simple answer on another

user forum. Let me clarify that I was using neither USB or Firewire but through

a network woth a EpsoNet print server node attached to my 2200. But the

problem was the same, worked perfect in 10.2 but the minute I upgraded to

10.3 Panther, My jobs would process and then immediately get canceled.

The solution I found was to simply go into Applications>Utility>Printer Setup

Utility first click on your 2200 printer listing and click on Delete, then click Add

and click on the 2200 listing once you see it and click Setup. Hey it works fine

now, I don't ask questions, I'm just glad I don't have to send all my print jobs

through a 10.2.5 machine to get prints out of my beloved 2200.

In case you are still having trouble with the 2200 in Panther. I have been having the same

problems for a month since I got my new G5--spent all day yesterday trying to fix it and

then noticed this morning that epson uploaded new driver for 10.3 yesterday evening. I

installed it and for the first time --- trouble-free printing! Follow same directions as

above but with the new driver
