Help - Canon EOS 1000 only works in manual mode.

Hey everyone. My friend just gave me the camera (which was dropped)

and it only works in manual mode. Since the motor is inside the lense,

is it likely that I could fix it if I simply replaced the faulty

lense? Could there be something wrong w/ components inside the body?

I'm open to any suggestions/ideas. Thanks.

You mean only manual focus works, i.e., AF is disabled? First, make sure the AF/MF switch is set to AF (on lens barrel). If AF is a no-go, try another lens (friend or camera shop if you don't have one). If, indeed, it is the lens, a new lens is a good investment if you plan to keep using the camera or upgrade to a better body later. The EF 28-105 3.5-4.5 USM is an excellent starter lens.

If the AF circuits in the body are damaged, chuck it and buy a new Rebel Ti.

Sometimes the light’s all shining on me. Other times I can barely see.

Continuing to guess here, but if only 'M' mode works (as opposed to MF), then that would indicate a problem in the AE circuitry of the camera - or in the ability of the lens to respond to the camera's diaphragm control commands. Given some of the crazy behavior people get from simply having dirty lens-body contacts, I suppose it's not inconceivable for something similar to occur after a drop.

Again, tough to give you any solid hints without more information about exactly what doesn't work, in what circumstances, and what you've tried to do in order to fix the situation.
