80mm Planar C Coated?

I purchased a Hasselblad 500C (not the cm) and want to buy an 80mm

Planar lens for body. I have seen an 80mm 2.8 Planar C. I want to

know if this lens is coated? I have heard that the C T* is a coated

lens. Are the newer CF and CFi lenses coated? Would it be ok to use

the plain C with color slide film. Again is it coated? Thanks. Joe

Joe, you have it all wrong. All of the lenses you mentioned are coated. Almost any commercial photographic lens made after 1948 or so is coated. What varies among optics is the type of coating and the lens' resistance to flare under difficult conditions, such as when bright light sources are in the image area. Other factors are also responsible for flare control such as internal baffles, blackening the edges of elements, the no. of glass-air surfaces, etc., and these older Planars were very well engineered in this respect. An old Planar 80C will perform beautifully if you take care to always use the hood.

It's coated, but not T* multicoated. I think the difference is

between 95% of internal reflections being blocked by the lens coating and 99% being blocked. This is from memory though -- don't quote me.

It'll work fine for most uses with a hood -- I have a 150 C that I'm very happy

with. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like to upgrade some day though...
